Re: collocation question

Wow Joel, you really put some thought into that one, nice job.

Biz I will give you one example of why people need "colo"
We do online databackup. We literately handle about 1TB of data a day. That data is then "replicated" to our West Coast Colo'ed servers. There is simply no way to shift that much traffic under any other transport other than Gigy Ethernet.
Ontop of that We have Coagent and L3 as providers. We use coagent on the out "sending" as much as we can since there 1/10 the cost per MB. If they go down or have routing issues we automatically switch to our Level 3 connection. Its literately 2 hops from our Eastcoast to west since it travels only on the internal route of either provider. Our traffic never hits the open internet since both providers are in the same colo's. Thats an example of our own gear in a COLO.

Another example would be like rackspace.com which has prebuilt servers for pretty much anything you want to do but its on their servers instead of yours and you lease those from them, plus bandwidth etc.

We use our own gear but that gives you "maybe" a better idea
of what the terms are and uses are for COLO's/Datacenters.
