| Wow... talk about Innovation and future-proofing.... NOT Anyone else think Qwest is going to get pwned by Cable and 3rd party offerings which DO include broadband, TV, and GASP VOIP phone services?
Wow, what a visionary CEO. "Let's just sit on our geographical monopoly." Problem is, IF they won't bring it, well, someone else will... or at least it will come to the highly profitable areas first, and Qwest will bleed the high end customers like crazy.
HMM. Seems his business plan is to sit back and milk the USF for all it's worth.

| | | Re: Wow... talk about Innovation and future-proofing.... NOT I don't know about who can kill them, because they have different competitors in different states, like Comcast in one, or Mediacom, no one who has the same footprint exactly. I see them being content sitting on their regional monopoly, and no one willing to use the capital to unseat them. Unless those cable companies make their prices competitive on all fronts, I see people choosing Qwest. In all honesty I do not like Qwest because i can't get the 7mb Tier at my house and my friend can!! (ARGHH!!) But they are a good deal for people on a budget, especially who don't understand the speed, as long as it is faster than Dial-Up then they are good. A lot of people look at the price only. | |

| Re: Wow... talk about Innovation and future-proofing.... NOT Yeah, I understand that, and that's what Qwest is counting on.... ---but--- Basically they are offering DSL and POTS.
A cable company can already offer TV and Broadband... and they are hungry for more revenue... so they are adding phone service left and right.
Basically, they can come in with a bundle TV, Phone, Internet and pull the rug from under Qwest... and all Qwest can do is keep lowering prices to try and keep people... which isn't exactly a way to grow profits. Sure Qwest offerings partnership with DTV, but that's DTV's business and gets limited profits for Qwest, and Qwest can't cut DTV's prices to compete with cable.... so they are forced to only cut their DSL and POTS prices to try and keep people out of Cable's hands.
It's not a path to future growth, me thinks. -- "Regulatory capitalism is when companies invest in lawyers, lobbyists, and politicians, instead of plant, people, and customer service." - former FCC Chairman William Kennard (A real FCC Chairman, unlike the current Corporate Spokesperson in the job!)

NOT The beautiful thing about partnering with DTV is that Qwest has no major capital expenses to provide that service. Yes the profit margin is thin, but the ROI is huge...as long as they can maintain a good relationship with DTV.
The path to future growth is to monitor the market and realistically continue to build out infrastructure as fiscally allowed.

... Such as Liberty Media, for example......
Course, it all depends. After all, I did say "IF"....

NOT Then why did you say that Qwest would get "owned" if another business bought a sat TV company? Buyouts/Mergers happen all of the time, often having little effect on existing partnerships.

NOT Because, if a media company with a strong interest or ties to Qwest's cable competitors takes over DTV then they could refuse to renegotiate the partnership or terminate it, leaving Qwest without the "TV" bundle option.

| Re: Wow... talk about Innovation and future-proofing.... NOT True... but I imagine Qwest's customers being forced to switch and get all new equipment would be a big downside.
Personally, Qwest should just build out fiber. Even if it's slow going at first. Sitting on their hands saying they don't need it is not a good plan for the future. -- "Regulatory capitalism is when companies invest in lawyers, lobbyists, and politicians, instead of plant, people, and customer service." - former FCC Chairman William Kennard (A real FCC Chairman, unlike the current Corporate Spokesperson in the job!)

NOT They are building fiber in new markets (which does make sense and the other telecoms are doing the same). Qwest doesn't have the resources to do what VZ, or even AT&T, is doing. The CEO is attempting to placate his bosses so that he can keep his job. He is able to give consumers a "bundle" at little to no investment from Qwest. If I owned a business with limited resources, I'd look for those strategic partnerships to provide value to my offerings while minimizing my expenditures.

Smartest idea, when its too expensive to compete, DONT! Downsize and cut costs and operating expenses. There will ALWAYS be someone who will demand a T1 or other business connections (cell towers for example). And if your subscriber counts fall too low in your urban/suburban areas, get USF funding for them, hey its farm density right? lol
