Sith HMPI Did What?Premium join:2004-04-25 Bloomington, IL 4 edits | Switched from Insight? Post here I was recently switched from Insight to Comcast. All was well until I was really switched. By that I mean my connection went dead, I lost my static IP for good, and I had to reboot all the routers and modem to regain a connection. Once reconnected I of course had a Comcast IP.
Now before this switch I could not have asked for better service. I was getting my full 10mb all the time no mater what time of day. I could game online and download a 2g file with out even one noticing the other. All at the same time still receiving my full 10mb. Games would hover in the 45-50ms ping area during this. After the download it would go down to as low as 30ms depending on the area of the server. Realistically it would be around 40-45ms.
Now, the exact day I get switched over my speeds are in the dumps all day. By all day I mean ALL day. My downloads are about 250K and my game pings average 85-150ms with out a download. This carries on until about 5:00am when it is back to normal again. I know this because I go to work and check it before I go. When I get home ( around 2:00pm-3:00pm CST) it's back to slow again. This continues until at least 11:00pm when I go to bed. I get up in the morning, it is fine, rinse, repeat.
Was I just dumped on a new node that is obviously overloaded? Will it change when the transition is complete? Is it complete already and this is what I'm stuck with? Finally,I am in Illinois. Chicago would be the likely closest target for a speed test I would think. Why does it say I am closer to Oklahoma now? A speed test to Chicago shows a full 10mb. Any where else on any given test shows I'm getting about 3mb if I'm lucky. Thank you for looking at this and any suggestions you may have.
If you are experiencing the same thing feel free to chime in as well. At least then I will know I am not alone. Please keep it civil and no "Comcast(insert derogatory statement here)" threads. Thanx again.

 | Re: Problems After Being Fully Switched from Insight to Comcast Looks like you aren't the only one experiencing problems since the InsightBB switch.
I have been a comcast customer for a while, only thing available in my area sadly and since the switch my dl/ul speed have been absolutely terrible most of the day,
Additionally my ping average has gone from ~30-50ms for most games/sites to over 150ms during primetime (5pm-10pm weekdays).
Not sure what comcast plans to do about this but I am going to end up calling them if nothing is done. |

 | reply to Sith HMP Yesterday our internet connection tanked for a few hours (the modem only had one light, and even after cycling it we had trouble getting it to get connected again).
Now it's working but it's incredibly slow |

Re: Switched from Insight? Post here we who had insight and now forced to comcast must suffer slower speeds until comcast can upgrade their equipment to be as good as insight, was told that they had no idea how long this would take but it includes all customers in il that used to be insight. |

1 edit | It's pretty erratic right now for me. Sometimes I'll get download speeds at 30 Mbps and sometimes its 5 Mbps. Pings also jump all the time with very frequent packet loss during prime time.
I really don't want to go to DSL but if that will get me the low pings I need, then it will be goodbye Comcast pretty soon.
And what's up with this ridiculous routing I'm getting to various Chicago based servers? Some of my favorite gaming servers USED to go from here in Urbana/Champaign pretty much straight up to Chicago with Insight. Now I'm going all the way to Indianapolis and then sometimes up to Michigan then back to Chicago for an AWESOME(not) 50 ms as opposed to the 15ish I got with Insight. 50 ms was something I used to get to Dallas, Denver, and New York... |

suchey join:2008-02-28 Dunlap, IL | I am seeing the EXACT same issues as Oddsk8er.
Speed jumps around a lot (I have not seen 30Mbps...my speeds have been fluctuating erratically between the 10/1 that I should be getting and much much lower), pings are MUCH higher at all times than they were before the cut over, and routing is taking me into Chicago, then out to the East Coast, then back into Chicago before sending me along to my final destination. |

 | reply to Sith HMP IT IS FIXED!!!! HOOORAY!!!!!!!!
I am in Macomb and have had my comcast IP for a few days now. I had MAJOR problems the past 24-36 hours. I could not open my school email or hotmail from my comcast connection. Everything was fine on my neighbors DSL but all of us with Comcast had NOTHING!
If you are having problems with Comcast not loading websites and being all around slow now that the switch occured just get a new modem. I just picked up a Motorola SB5101 from my local white-trash super center and spend 25 minutes on the phone with Comcast. When they got they finally got the MAC address changed EVERYTHING was back to normal. I spent 30 minutes on the phone this morning with a "tech" that had no clue. I am supposed to have a "tier 2" tech call me in the next 24-48 hours to solve my problem.
The guy said ALL insight customers are having big problems and they have no clue why! |

 | reply to Sith HMP Alright, my little switch nightmare:
A couple weeks ago, my internet went down around midnight, and came back about a half hour later, now with a Comcast IP. Now that speedtest.net says I'm located in Stillwater, Oklahoma, I get about half the speed I should, up and down. Also, I was unable to access a specific website (worldofwarcraft.com) or anything connected to that website. After some research, I switch modems to a Linksys BEFCMU10 ver 1, from a BEFCMU10 ver 2. I had stopped using the ver 1 because it was basically broken, so I thought.
Plugging in the new modem worked great. Speeds were perfect, no issues like before the switch with the modem crashing, or limited Bittorrent activity, ect. I am even able to access worldofwarcraft.com and accompanying sites.
That all continues for a week or so, until this Tuesday, the 26th. Around lunch time, 12:30, my modem goes offline, and reads the same four errors about an invalid config file, ect. So I switch modems back to the ver 2, and am able to get online and browse, just not to that specific website.
So I place my first call to Comcast, after plugging in the ver 1 modem that has been working just fine until now. I speak with a lady who cannot see my modem and wants to send a Tech out. I call back a second time, speaking with a gentlemen who registers my ver 1 modem, pushes it through, but I am still unable to connect. He wants to send out a tech out as well at this point. I plug back in the ver 2, call back again, and let the tech see that everything is connected. She notes that it is, and then tries to register my ver 2 modem, pushes it through, and now it's unable to connect as well. I plug the ver 1 back in that is now unregistered, and she can see it connected. She tries to register that one, gets it through and it goes back to not being able to connect.
At this point she gets me on 3-way with a supervisor, who has me go through both procedures again. Basically, anytime they register one of my two modems, it cannot connect. She puts them both on the account, and neither can connect. So she makes a ticket number for me, and passes it off to a higher level tech who says the problem should be corrected in 24-48 hours. I call a couple more times during that period, and receive the same message that things are being worked on, ect ect.
During this time, I obtain a new modem, something completely different than my Linksys modems, from a friend. Hook it up, call Comcast to get it registered, and am told that they can't push it through because the system is down, and to call back a couple hours later. I call back later on, and am told the system has been down all day, and will be down all night as well, and possibly most of tomorrow. So I have no idea if the new modem will work or not, I guess I'll find out when they can push it through.
Right now I am running on my unregistered ver 2 modem, at about half speed, and am unable to access the same website that this modem for some reason cannot access on Comcasts system. Who knows when or if my original two modems will ever be looked at or fixed, and in the meantime I am hoping the system to push a modem through will be returned to working order soon so that I can find out if this new modem will solve my problems or not.
Overall I am extremely frustrated. I have been without internet for over 3 nights now, and am very seriously considering DSL as an alternative. I have been told numerous times to expect a call back when they need more information from me, or when they have changed something that they think will help matters, and have received not a single call from them in this three day period. |
|
 | Alright, update for today. I called back Comcast twice, second time go to someone to push my new (RCA) modem through. Everything worked without a hitch, and I'm getting good throughput, and I can browse to all the websites I've tried.

Tests like that to Chicago (from Central, IL) are common, seeing bursts like others who recently got successfully switched over. To other places I'm seeing anywhere from 6-8, rather than 20+ to Chicago.
Anyway, glad that nightmare is at least for now over with. A higher level tech has still never gotten back to me, but I made sure to tell the person I talked to that I wanted the tickets on my other modems left open so I could track down the problem.
Advice to anyone having similar issues: Get a hold of a modem that isn't locked down by Inisight. |

I am unable to send more than a couple lines in email or in posting to web forums, and some websites will not load (Urbana, IL) since Monday (and I have reset for comcast.net as per faqs) |

I'm not sure what the modem log stuff means, but I don't think that "failed to receive/acquire" is good... |

 | I also live in central IL (Bloomington) and have been getting terrible service since last Friday. Ive called multiple times and their techs dont know anything. They keep wanting me to get a new modem and schedule a service call. In December I did get a new modem and had a new line run to my home so i dont need to get another one. I was running great until the switch took place earlier this week. I hope comcast gets their act together soon. If anyone in central IL has gotten their service back to normal please post and tell me what you did to get it back to normal.
Thanks Andy |

 | reply to Sith HMP yeah i to been calling them since Wednesday. and last night i call to have another router register, Linksys BEFCMU10 and i had to wait no less then 20 minutes to get it done. guess there was a line waiting for such actions. then after that i lost all and any connection after my modem over all.
after trying what that tech knew for about another hour, tech decide on setting up a visit. so after that i call my good friend from Florida, who is a certified network tech and does install for Comcast down there. he had me do a few things nad after 10 minutes or so i was able to get out and surf.
but still there is issues on that as well. which must be Comcast side since if i surf more then a few pages and do this quickly it dies out. but if i wait after a few minutes it is ok, kind of like it has to catch its breath.
then i can surf some more and even post as well. since i change to from the supplied modem WebStar that i got from Insight to this Linksys modem i am able to do more now.
kind of strange of it acting like that uh?
also found out that my Linksys WRT54GL router has anew firmware update Firmware Version: v4.30.12
so far i am not sure of what it does, if anything good or not. kind of wish i could do that with the modem though? |

 | reply to Sith HMP dinoruss, im having similar problems with my connection... speedtest.net upload test hangs before it starts, cant sent emails, having tried on several smtp servers, cant post to forums (im posting from work), cant send files via sftp... seems to only effect large files as you said.
the strange thing is that if i vpn to my work's network, i can upload just fine to anywhere. ive talked with comcast several times, and they have no idea whats going on. |
