Comcast involvement I have contacted Comcast support via their web chat. Long story short:
"I am pinging your modem, and the pings are going very slow, I do see the issue on my side as well Chet"
Tech scheduled for 3/11.
What should I be looking for before and during the house-call that would help to ensure the issue is corrected?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

dinoruss, im having similar problems with my connection... speedtest.net upload test hangs before it starts, cant sent emails, having tried on several smtp servers, cant post to forums (im posting from work), cant send files via sftp... seems to only effect large files as you said.
the strange thing is that if i vpn to my work's network, i can upload just fine to anywhere. ive talked with comcast several times, and they have no idea whats going on. Yes that seems to be the same story I get. Some techs try to help but after the usual stuff -- finding my settings are ok they have to pass it along. And that is where it seems to be sitting for now.

I've got the same thing (also in C-U). I've found some stuff that seems to help (a little). UIUC VPN does help me too. Using IE instead of firefox makes some sites load that don't otherwise. Bypassing any routers and plugging directly into the modem (Moto SB5120 for me) seems to speed some things up. Another problem I have is connecting my TIVO, in any configuration.
I'll call and complain tomorrow. Hopefully with enough calls they'll do something soon. |

Ping statistics for comcast.net Packets: Sent = 10, Received = 10, Lost = 0 (0.0%) Round Trip Times: Minimum = 69ms, Maximum = 121ms, Average = 90ms Packet loss on the intermediary routers is not important. If there is no packet loss at the destination, then 100% of the packets to the destination are making it through; no packet loss. Your ping statistics show no packet loss to the destination.
Latency shows a high variance, though. 70ms is about right for Midwest to West.

Again, no packet loss at the destinaion. East Coast to you is showing packet loss at your end. I would say there are likely issues close to you (between modem and CMTS).

As stated in my note in the first post in this thread, if you are switched and want help troubleshooting as a Comcast subscriber, you could start a topic like anyone else. Be sure to include the requested info relevant to your problem: »Comcast High Speed Internet FAQ »How To Get Help!
This thread is for general discussion of issues many of you may have in common as you transition. Comcast customers desiring troubleshooting help from the forum should always start individual help topics. What is UIUC VPN mean? Logging in to your machine desktop at work with microsoft remote desktop? Not really. It's connecting to UIUC's network through another ISP. Allows you to read journals etc as if you were on campus. Go here - »www.cites.uiuc.edu/vpn/download-install.html |

Sheepdog-good luck getting a tier 2 tech to call you back. I have spent all week on the phone with comcast with connection probs. I have asked to speak with a tier 2 tech and for some reason they won't let me. They said they would put in a work order and call within 24-48 hours. It's been 5 days and no call. Every time I call comcast they say it's a problem with the switch from insight to comcast and can't give a time when it will be fixed. For everyone-ask comcast for a credit. They gave me one for the last week. I even told the tech I was talking to that I am tempted to go with another provider and she said she isn't saying don't. These people don't care if our net is screwed up cause they are still getting our $$$$$$$. |

The PowerBoost makes any Java or small file size Speed Test worthless. My real world DL speed was around 12,000 and it still is.

| reply to Bloomington IL I got switched or so they say 2-25-08, Rockford, IL. I reset my modem Motorola SB5100, my router, and my computer many times and could not get back on the net. I called Comcast repeatedly and was given a bit of a run around. They finally said that they could not see my modem and that maybe it was bad. On 2-21-08 I bought a new modem, Motorola SB5101 and suddenly they could see my modem and they got be back on line. Comcast said that Insight did not give them the correct Mac ID for my old modem but I was running fine on Insight with no speed or any problems for quite a while. I am now running fine but my speed test are a little higher than before.
Download Speed: 12780 kbps (1597.5 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 1431 kbps (178.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
I guess I should not complain. On the news here in Rockford Sunday night there was a story about lots of people here in Rockford still having problems. Some people on the news said that their old modems were not compatible with Comcast and they had to buy new ones???????? |

1 edit | I'm not a networking pro, but there are some things I don't understand. Notice the second hop? Is that the gateway. It ALWAYS shows as 'timed out' on a traceroute. Also, notice how it hops from the east coast, back to Chicago, then back to the east coast again. This can't be efficient. No wonder so many people report latency. Somebody with more experience please tell me if I'm off-base here.

Trace complete.
The route basically makes a loop through all of the cities around Indianapolis before it goes on into Indy, then on to Chicago - nevermind that Lafayette is closer to Chicago than Indy... which means that the packets make a loop around the state before coming back past Lafayette on their way to Chicago! Pretty funny, if you ask me. I'm expecting this will get optimized eventually? Right? |
