| Does Teksavvy block port 25, and for who?
A friend of mine is looking for a new ISP and one of the requirements is that port 25 is open, since he runs a personal exchange server for himself. In searching through the forums with the term "port 25", I haven't been able to find a definitive answer on this. Does Teksavvy block port 25, and if so, is that for dynamic IP's, static IP's?
Thanks in advance |

| First, they may or may not have implemented this policy yet. But if/when they do, they've clearly stated the following:
1) Static IP users will not have the port blocked as it's easy to deal with them if there are abuse issues 2) Dynamic IP users will be able to have the port block removed if they request it
The vast majority of people don't need it, so it's easier/safer to block it by default and then unblock it for more savvy users (static IPs) or those who specifically request it. |

Unfortunatly, because of the unfortunate predominance of Windows, leaving port 25 opened for everyone by default results in many invidudual Windows computers becoming infected with spam-bots and spewing out tons and tons of spam.
As TSI grows, the number of events where a customer gets infected grows and this risks seeing some RBLs adding the whole TSI IP block in their black lists.
When that happens, all legitimate TSI customers who run secured SMTP servers see themselves being on a black list. And while TSI would probably endeavour to rectify the situation once they are made aware of it, this results in periods of time where customers who don't run windows are penalised because other customers run windows. And in the end, a bad reputation for teksavvy if its IPs are regularly added to the RBLs.
I realise that it is possible to make a windows box behave intelligently on the net, but the fact is that generally speaking, they are vulnerable by default.
There was a long discussion about this Teksavvy possible policy some time ago.
And one reason that their policy won't generate much negative feedback is that they agree to not block static IPs by default, and provide option to unblock individual dynamic IP customers on request. |

Unblocking of dynamic IPs? Due to their nature, couldn't the user have a different IP the next hour (for various reasons) and request the new one unblocked ( while TSI having the block the old IP )? |

Most likely it will be based on there login. So when they connect their PPPoE session it will give them a dynamic IP from a select pool of unblocked IPs. I would expect there isn't many users who need port 25 open and are using dynamic IPs
You are asking for nothing but problems running an email server on a dynamic IP. I did it for years and always had issues with emails being bounced. |

Thanks, that's the kind of explanation I was after. Now I get it. |
