[Connectivity] Intermittent Disconnects

said by Rokh :

Advice to anyone having similar issues: Get a hold of a modem that isn't locked down by Inisight.
Sorry for short posts but with whatever is wrong this is all I can push out from my house to forums and via email. I have an older Motorola SurfBoard SB3100 I leased from Insight and it has been nothing but reliable until this fiasco starting on Monday!

Re: Switched from Insight? Post here

here are some error messages I get in sending mail over 3--lines long
-----------
Sending the message content to the server failed.

Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be delivered.

Usually can send a couple lines or less or just a couple words but did get a 3 line thing once then it would not send the next time

Note after several sessions swith techs in chat they had me using the followoing faq: »www.comcast.net/help/faq/index.j···ac)17798. That worked about for 12 hours and I was back to some websites not working in login or posting in forums unless my text was short.

It also seems I can post with quick post here but like on other forums since the change (and short sentences only my third post is the longest I have been able to do on forums lately). Regular post does not work for me here.

I have to take my laptop away from home to local hotspot or my ethernet on campus (hardwire) to post and login to comcast.net site. Cannot load Chicago Tribune articles just front page, other forums I do can only post short sentences. Cannot log into my bank account but can to credit card, phone accounts, state farm. All since monday when we changed to comcast.net mail servers.

Since I am limited from home I am going to break up details to short bursts in quick reply here of the problems and how they came about.

It started with change 2 nights ago, my insightbb smtp stopped working
in the send mode (still receiving mail ok) I use apple mail
3.2 on a iMac with system 10.5.2
Found from one of your staff in chat on Tuesday morning that I needed
to change settings for the comcast smtp. I changed per
instructions to that setting as per the faq
doc--»www.comcast.net/help/faq/index.j···ac)17798
That worked for a few hours and then failed again in send mode but
still receiving mail.

I tried for along time but then chatted with
one of your staff in chat Tuesday evening around 8 or 9 PM cst and
they told me I needed to use the settings in the faqs below:
those are settings in faqs that say they are for on road accessing of
my comcast mail but they worked completely that night and til
sometime in morning. I then left for office and other errands and even
found that these settings from this second faq did "work on
road" at hotspots and via my office internet access. I had never been
able to to my old insight that way at office but maybe did not
have those details?

Oops the first faq was »www.comcast.net/help/faq/index.j···ac)18530 with port 587 -- cannot edit my post either here. Sorry.,

anyway ...

came home at 5 PM to find I again was apparently unable to send mail
with these new settings for some time. Then late in
evening made a discovery. If my messages were short, say a couple or
three, maybe 4 lines (Not sure how many characters they
would send fine, but if much longer they would not send. Eventually I
would get errors one which I had seen before:
Sending the message content to the server failed.
Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click
Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be
delivered.
and the second sometimes (not all the time) but different

So my settings on mail are ok but only if I want to send short
messages. Whereas from Tuesday evening until sometime in morning
I could send mail of any length.

also want to mention web problems because they seem related
Web:
When the mail sever changes started late Monday I found some web sites
that require login did not completely work, or some totally
failed.A couple that worked only on front page, for example Chicago
Tribune website would let me see front page but (I have auto
login to my free subscription) upon trying to read an article it fails.
Well I mention this because when we got the "mail fixed" on Tuesday
evening settings for on road use and SSL working the
technician told me to try different browser than safari. I used
firefox and lo the page worked. And at that time there was one other
page that worked but only limited -- will get to that in minute
Well next morning the safari logins to my Chicago Tribune article
pages also worked. But upon coming home on Wednesday
evening I found that my firefox and safari logins to CT article pages
was also failing again along with mail again.

While tinkering I found other web pages that had worked until
Wednesday now also had some problems loading secondary pages,
including videos I watch like ABC Lost episodes and CBS Jericho
episodes -- the only ones I ever watch from TV on web.
But of interest is a forum I frequent. I could login, post private
messages, and read articles but not post to articles, or change my
preferences for my login info. Well by Wednesday evening I find now I
cannot even post private messages. But I made and
important discovery, it was the length of my "posts" private or
otherwise that was the problem. If my posts or private messages were
short they would go = less than 3-4 lines. Longer and they would not.
Sound familiar? Well it is just like what is happening to mail. I
then went back to mail and not realizing that what was going on
started testing. I found right away short tests would send and long
text ones would not.

So it appears alot of my mail and web problems are related to
something being done during these changes that limits how much
data/text my mail program or web browsers can send. And given that
when my mail worked fine for any length Tuesday evening til
sometime Wednesday and at least one of my problem web pages started
working (Chicago Tribune) in both browsers, that it too is
related and the login process might be sending too much text.

I have talked in chat and email with comcast folks and they say it is part of the problems experienced putting us all on from insight but they cannot be clear on when this will work. In meantime I am almost at a week of internet that at best only works in some areas and in some I rely on it does not. I am paying too much for this kind of problems so long. They should have had this ready before they put us all on, but knowing computer networks I suppose not.

Oh yes but it has been a reliable dinosaur with insight (date when I run the ip number to look at its stats show it is probably 8 years old?) I do not have more funds right now to go out and buy and then have to deal with techs to see if another one will work given all the problems.
