What happens is when everything is turned off, your router will boot faster than the modem and by the time the modem has the "ready light" your router is already through requesting the IP. I'd do exactly what swayzak mentioned and you should be fine :)

Yes, that makes sense.

Unfortunately the person I'm doing this for will not leave stuff plugged in / on (paranoid about fire risk etc).

I think she is going to have to deal with this every time she boots up.

The way this PC is setup, everything is powered from a single wall socket.

Only after PC has booted and I see I can't connect to internet.

Then I powerdown modem, then router. Then turn on modem & wait for sync & ready lights to both be on constantly. Then turn on router.

Then internet works fine.

Yes, I can access the router settings.

Don't know about the modem (never had to access it before) - it's an ntl cable modem (just says "ntl 250" on the bottom).

Printer still prints.

I've just setup cable broadband for someone, with cable modem & Linksys WRT54GS wireless router (which also has printer connected). It's basically a wired network, using Linksys as junction box for modem ethernet cable & printer (although the Wii uses wireless network).

Everytime I turn the plug off at wall (e.g. at night) and then turn everything on again the next day, I get connection to the wired network but NO INTERNET.

I have to do the old "turning off modem & router, then turning them back on again" routine (whilst PC is on) to get reconnected to internet.

This is obviously less than ideal..

Anyone know why this happens & how, if possible, it could be avoided.

We don't want to leave the modem & router on all the time.
