GPS Recommendations

I am considering an upcoming purchase of a GPS unit for car and portable use. I do a lot of travel for work mostly out of the continental United States and would like a unit that is easily expandable for areas in the Caribbean and Europe.

I noticed some units are rechargeable for use away from the vehicle. I guess I would like a car unit that is either rechargeable, or has batteries so I could also use it occasionally for locating hotel, restaurant, points of interest etc. while traveling or sightseeing.

The small hand held units seem more in line for hiking, camping hunting use and is not really what I am looking for.

Hopefully,I can find one that has US/Europe/Caribbean pre-loaded and any other add-on software isn't too expensive.

Any insight on some good units to choose that will do the above for my first GPS unit?

Thanks

I think the TomTom Go 720 is a good choice for what you are looking for. They have really great maps for the United States and overseas. It does charge in the car but has a decent battery life outside of the car. It has a really large face with detailed graphics. also, has TTS which might be helpful to you as well.

i have the tomtom 720. the maps are for the us and canada only. if you also need maps for your europe you will need to go with the 920. prices for the 720 and 920 are going down with the release of the 730 and 930 which adds 'advanced lane guidance' and 'iq routes'. there's talk of upgraded firmware that could be released for the 720 and 920 that could enable these features.

Check out the garmin Nuvi line. I have the nuvi 670 and nuvi 780. The 670 comes preloaded with a lot of Europe and north America.

I don't know much about the Tom tom's only the garmin units

The Nuvi series can charge in the wall or by computer and of course by 12v cigarette lighter in the car.

I am very pleased with my GPS's.

I'm not sure if there are maps for the Caribbean i haven't looked. Its worth looking at I hope you dont skip over them.

Hope this helps you.

The TomTom GO 720 is a good unit and you can buy a 4GB memory card and put European maps on it. I haven't seen any Caribbean maps for the TomTom though.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 350 and I love it. It gets me around just fine. It's an older model and still available on line for around $200.
