philfnaPremium join:2003-12-30 Wisconsin | WiMAX The west side tower just went operational on Friday as an FYI. 6mbits/3mbits is now going to be widely available on the west side of town via WiMax. Just ordered it with an April 1, 2008 install date. Will let people know how the latency / speed is. |
|
 | That is exciting to say the least -- we've been hearing about wimax for a long time now, yet I don't know anyone who actually is a customer using it yet anywhere.
I can't wait to hear how wimax works out real-world, and how the signal's penetration / line of sign requirements compare real-world to conventional small-wisp 2.4 ghz / 900 mhz strategies. -- Wildblue in Lake Michigan | Color Printing Forum Unhappy with noticeably slower secure sites, higher latency due to 11/17/06 firmware changes |

 | can you do a traceroute and how far are you from the tower? |

I am 2600 feet from the tower. The tower is also on their fiber ring opposed to a bonded T-1 product. It is really quite fast. Only issue I have is that the up is supposed to be 3 mbits, and I saw the guy get 2.8 but I've only gotten around 2 mbits.
Also have the receiver on the roof. It works well. Rock solid in the storm. |
|
 | Wow! Congratulations!!!
Those speeds are amazing for rural America -- very very nice!
What is the make of the equipment they're using? |

I actually live where we can get 10/1 cable service from Charter, but this has been rock solid through a rain storm. I am now getting 6.1 mbits down / 2.8 mbits up now that the ran has subsided. The slowest it has been is 5.7 mbits down / 1.5 mbits up. |

 | reply to philfna Here is what you can get from Charter for pretty much the same price as WIMAX in Madison

Full TV package, HD, VOD, VOIP (unlimited long distance and local), and 16MB for $100/mo. 1 year deal. My TDS is being disconnected in a few hours. I've had Charters 16MB running along side it for a week now. The 16MB is isnice. Torrents rock, latency low, andIonly pickupabout 10-20mson my trace routes between 8pm and 11pm when everyone is using it. Charter just has too much bang for the buck right now. |
|
 | reply to philfna btw I'm in Madison too. |

philfnaPremium join:2003-12-30 Wisconsin 1 edit | After tweaking VISTA which I know sounds odd, but I did I am getting these speeds day in and day out. Now, it isn't the 16/2 that leaving_TDS is getting, but it is still quite respectable.

For apples to apples I used the same test yet you did. |

philfnaPremium join:2003-12-30 Wisconsin | reply to philfna Tweaked the upload settings on Vista (which I always assumed needed no tweaking).

Now I get this about 80 percent of the time on my 6meg/3meg service. |
|
 | have you tried any online gaming over wimax? |
|
philfnaPremium join:2003-12-30 Wisconsin | reply to philfna No I have not, but the ping times are acceptable for that I would imagine 48-73 ms. |
