[FireFox] Invalid file hash -261 Mozilla FF extension D/L error

Error message screenshot
It's gotta be something limited to my PCs, or I'd see thousands of complaints in my Google and BBR searches on the error. So far, I found only one relevant hit, and that that points to a corrupting non-Mozilla server for one add-on.

Anyway, no matter what I try to download from Mozilla's extensions at »https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox I get the error. I've tried several, including ones that I already have installed and that have been updating just fine as late as today.

It's happening on my laptop and desktop here at home. I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.12 on both systems and have made no other recent changes to either system or networks(I have separate wired and wireless routers and subnets).

Any ideas, solutions are appreciated - Hope it's a PBKAC issue that has a simple answer -

Thanks in advance!

EG

Re: [FireFox] Invalid file hash -261 Mozilla FF extension D/L e

Update - found bug report # 420278 in Bugzilla - looks like there have been other scattered reports.

At least I know I'm not nuts -but even that is subject to discussion...

I have gotten that also. Just download it to the desktop then drag it to the add-ons box, it will install.

I just updated Wireshark and WinPCap so I could capture the request to see if I could get more info, and Lo and Behold, the download/install seems to be working with no errors now.

I updated at bugzilla, it appears the bug is still open. My guess is that some buggy hash generating/checking code has been replicated to some of the server mirrors.

The issue as reported elsewhere in Bugzilla is/was that when a user downloaded any file (let it be an add-on or a product release file), the server(s) sent zero-byte responses (with a HTTP 200 response code) instead of actual data.

There may still be some servers with that code. If possible, please try to get a Wireshark capture and report in bug 420278 in bugzilla - they indicated that would be helpful as the assignees are unable to reproduce the bug at their locations.

Thanks again for the response!

I just downloaded firefox 2.0.0.12 and got the same problem
(error 261) with the extensions and themes.

But i found out that you can download the "themes" when you start firefox 2.0.0.12 in the "safe mode" see -start-programs-mozilla-mozilla (safe mode)!

I hope this will help other users.

John

Version 3.0.1 of the Video Downloadhelper extension caused this problem in many cases, you need to update to the newly available version to fix it:

This is good information in case somebody runs across the problem with this extension or error -261 .

I checked and I have DownloadHelper on both affected systems. They're at v 3.0.2 now. A quick test shows things are still working normally from my location as of this post.

Edit - Fred, thanks for your work on fixing this! I know it probably upset your weekend troubleshooting the issue.
