It's kind of funny to see Reznor receive the adoration of the masses for sticking it to "the man" (i.e. evil record labels). We're talking about a guy who is already very wealthy, poised to make even more money -- and rightly so. He creates music that people want enough to trade their money in for it.

However, when it's a corporation doing the same thing, all we hear about is "oh, the greed", "those filthy suits", and all the other nonsense.

Wonder if the next NIN concert will be $10 a seat as well?

And what about bands that don't already have millions in the bank and existing royalty structures for residual income? There's a reason why musicians have signed with labels and promoters over the years, and there are plenty of wealthy musicians out there, so obviously some part of it works.

I'm not saying companies don't frequently do idiotic things, but it's not because of their inherent evil-ness -- it's because they're often run by idiots.

He really isn't sticking it to the man. He just doesn't need the labels anymore. So how is not paying someone to do the work he can do now because of his popularity sticking it to the man?

Nice to see an artist making money and keeping what he earns, instead of having to give up a large percentage of that money to a record company.

I agree that record companies play a useful role in the development of an artist or group, but certainly that usefulness ceases to exist once the artist reaches a certain level of recognition.

Reznor is setting a good example for others to follow.

I think you may be missing the point a bit on this. There is quite a difference between what Trent Reznor is doing and what the the corporation is doing. I may be wrong but I am not seeing him selling the album for $15 or whatever the going rate is for a new album nowadays it is free or pay what you want, which I suppose one could pay the same amount the record companies decided to charge. Besides in this case the artist is making almost all the money not some muckity muck with a sue anyone with a computer as they may be theoretically cutting their bankroll.

Yes there is a reason that musicians have stayed with labels over the years, often because they have no choice after they are signed for x number of albums with no way out of the contract other than dissolving the band and no longer making any new albums. Also it could be argued fairly successfully that musicians are not exactly known for their business acumen. So they are fairly easy to take advantage of by the record companies. And while they may know they are being taken advantage of they have no idea of what to do about it.

First off, I have been a huge NiN fan since 1991. They have been my top fav band since that time. And Trent Reznor being my favorite musician as well.

Now that thats out of the way, Trent Reznor is a fucking hypocrite. A few years back I found a torrent of all of his videos and a few interviews, in one interview he was asked what he thought about file sharing and he stated that he thought it wasnt right, and that he believed it equated to stealing from the artists. Sadly, I cannot remember the name of the video, it was only like a 3min quick backstage interview, but maybe someone else might know of it. I would like to believe that he was just as misinformed as the general populace was about filesharing at the time, and that he finally "saw the light", but I think its really that he saw he didnt need the labels anymore, so he just figured in cutting out the middle man, not because he wanted to "stick it to the man", as some others have opined as well.

But I can overlook that as a fan because of what he has done recently, and throughout his career for his art. Remember, he was a fan of id software's work that he agreed to do the music for Quake. He has taken quite a few lesser known bands and helped promote them and worked with them. Such as Marylin Manson and A Perfect Circle. (Though A Perfect Circle was also helped by having Maynard James Keenan (Tool) in it and being backed by a major label, Reznor worked with them to help them get to that point and toured with them).

You also have to remember that Reznor owns his own recording studio that he built. He converted an old funeral parlor into a recording studio. He's also an extensive Apple user. Since he has always been the one that produced and mixed his work, and now that he has his own studio and is famous enough to get international notice whan he does something, it would be really really stupid for him to let a studio take a chunk for doing what he can do himself.

I'd expect to see him starting to support and promote some new bands here soon. He'd basiocally be just an indie label, but with the NiN brand backing it.

So how is he being a hypocrite? He's said these things regarding P2P quite a few years ago; it's not like he's uploading this music to TPB and then chastising the masses when they take advantage of it. He's just another artist who's realized over the years how much he's gotten screwed over by his record label (both Interscope and TVT).

His label is nothing Records. TVT and Interscope were the distributors or whatever the word is for it. (Still on 1rst cup of coffee, bare with me).

My point was that he used to be completely against p2p, then he suddenly decides to embrace it. I dunno, I'm really torn on the issue. I see both sides, he changed his mind because he wanted to be able to give his own music away for free if he wanted, but then again he still refers to it as stealing.

So yeah, maybe hypocrite is the wrong word, "flip-flopper" maybe more appropriate.
