I can get AT&T unlimited POTS/LD service for $40/month... just have to pay a few $$ more for Canada.

Too bad I don't see AT&T hyping CallVantage this way, as its only $25/month.
The same Company, same technology and yet 2 different prices. It will be hard to sell/switch someone who has CallVantage and Uverse to Uvoice. Who would want to pay 40 instead of 25?

You guys have to remember some thing.

CV is $25 but is going out on the internet and using your pipe. Uvoice has it's down dedicated stream that doesn't interfere with your internet. If it's like the cable companies version. It should have a battery backup, 911 behaves differently I believe and a tech would come out if a problem happens.

With any regular VoIP provider like CV, Vonage, etc. no tech comes out and depending on bandwidth it can be choppy.

A lot of folks don't want to deal with that they would rather call one number report A, B and/or C issue and some one comes out to fix it.

Why do you think people are paying the $$ to the cable companies for it's VoIP service. Like I stated earlier Comcast I believe is now the 4th or 5th largest phone company because of that.

Yeah - bundling it hasn't hurt them in that regards either.

I'm sure that if AT&T bundled CV with DSL (dry loop), they would probably have had more subs than Comcast with it.
You would deal with AT&T for both... they run CV and their DSL, so I don't see where they would have an issue.

I've used Skype now for more than a year, and its quality is very good. Cable almost has to use a dedicated channel in many areas, as they do have overloaded nodes in SOME areas, and can not guarantee and sort of QoS. DSL on the other hand typically has a very stable connection, which is why I've been able to use Skype and Skype webcam (to Canada no less) w/o any issues on a 3Mbps line.

I have a dry line and CV. The CV is supplied by my employer, and as a part of the install they had a UPS done also. the UPS is a bit oversized, a 1200, but does the job, even when I don't want to work. Considering AT&T is installing a $75 UPS, and are not responsible for maintaining the UPS, it has a high profit return for them, plus they no longer have to maintain the copper for your line between the BBOX and the CO. Most folks have cell phones so a power outage isn't that critical. I have never had any choppiness or other quality issues with it, but I have 10 meg down and 1.5 meg up pipe. If you were on the lowest DSL plans you might experience it.

Exactly... and I don't have 'kids' on my line throttling it with BT or other traffic.
I do have 2 cell phones on AT&T + a work line for Nextel Blackberry, so I'm not THAT worried about power outages. To add a note to that, I do have a car jumpstart kit and 200W AC inverted, which powered my laptop and DSL modem for hours w/o issue in the past.
Since you're on, and from Santa Clarita... could you post a trace to www.dnps.com - I'm curious to see the lag and hops to go out that way from Santa Clarita.
