enOehT : Ok, so I upgraded tonight from "performance with powerboost" to "blast" and it has made a big difference! It took about 5-6 minutes to get to 4% and when it got to this point, ATV told me it could start playing the movie. This is much better than having to wait over an hour.

Thanks for all the great responses.

yabos : For one thing you're using Comcast which is known to throttle. Is your connection 15Mbps all the time? Comcast has something called speedboost(or something like that) which speeds up your connection basically uncapped for the first 10 seconds or so and then throttles it down. This makes the speed tests look good like yours but when you're actually using it to download large files it's way slower. My rough calculation based on the % per minute you said, plus about a 4GB file is between 5-6 Mbit if those numbers are accurate.

I'm not sure about the Fios problem.

The files are 4Mbit maximum so if you have a connection faster than that you should be able to watch it live. If you have a connection slower than the bit rate of the movie you have to wait until the whole movie is downloaded before you can watch it.

LBDSL : That chart seems wrong. With a 6mbps connect you can start watching it in under a minute, but on a 2mbps it takes 2 hours!

I'm guessing the 6mbps should say less the one hour, which matches closer to what you guys see in the real world. So I'm betting it is a typo on that chart.
--
Lightning Bolt Technologies

Slow ATV HD download

enOehT : Hi all,

I purchased my second movie for rental on my ATV last night. It was the HD version of Transformers. I had hoped to start watching it last night, but the download took so long that it became too late and I had to go to bed. The same scenario happened when I purchased my first movie too.

Here is what happens, I start downloading the movie I want, and it shows advancement of ~1% every minute and a half. It took over an hour before it would let me start playing. This is not what is advertised. I feel I should be able to start watching within a minute or two, surely no longer than 10 minutes after purchasing it.

My broadband is super fast, I have comcast, and was getting >10,000 kbps down last night from a speakeasy speedtest. My wifi network is airport express running at G only. So I don't believe I have a bottleneck on my end.

So, what is the deal? Why are these HD movies taking sooooo long to dl?

Thanks.
