The TM502G is a great modem. If your wireless works fine without encryption, but not with it, you've got another problem - because all you're changing there is how your computer is connecting to the wireless router, that change has nothing to do with how the router is connecting to the modem.

Of course, doing a factory reset should be doing other things as well.

But as far as the modem's concerned, it's just a device with a MAC address that's requesting an IP - whether you're hardwired to the router, or using a protected or unprotected wireless connection, it doesn't know and doesn't care.

The battery backup will keep the MTA itself connected to the network as long as there's an available cable connection to it. A cable outage is another story - as is a power outage that would cause a cable outage (there should be some methods in place to minimize that, but you can't prevent everything). If "the modem will ligth up", it sounds like that wasn't a power outage - when it's running on the battery, the power light will flash and the telephone light will be solid or flashing (solid if in service and on hook, flashing if in use or while attempting to complete DOCSIS or telephony registration/connection) but DS, US, online and link should be out completely... And, of course, if the battery was not working, not there or deleted, the lights would all be out. Just use the reset button on the back of the modem. If you pull the power cable it just puts it into standy mode and shuts off the internet service to conserve energy for the dial tone.

There is nothing wrong with both Arris models and using a protected wifi router. I've used both with two different routers running a secured network and never had a problem. In fact my current Arris is feeding two fully protected linksys without a problem.

To stay on topic... let us know what modem the tech brings out next time. Apparently you have no idea what your talking about. If your house loses power the whole point of the batter is to keep power to the modem so your phones will still have Dial Tone. (for 8-10 hrs) Keep in mind this doesnt apply to cordless phones cause they need power to turn on and work properly.

I went to the very cool Arris status page found on the site here and it does show that the Battery is missing in the Event Log and CM State.

The modem's working fine, just wanted to be sure Comcast wasn't gonna go "wait a minute, there's no battery in there" and shut me down :p

Here's hoping the Netgear modem works out (once I can get the tech back out here).

MadMann, the Comcast tech did have a motorola surfboard (which is the one I wanted to have), but he couldn't get through to Comcast to get it set up. Something about it being refurbished and not "talking" to Comcast properly. He spent well over a half our on hold with Comcast trying to get that one working. Tell me there's something not wrong when a tech can't reach Comcast!

So, he had this one in with all his stuff, called a different number and got permission to use it instead. Now, if I find out they're charging me more a month rental? As you suspected, the battery is for phone service backup incase of power failure.

Even with the battery out, the phone service will work(but that isn't relavent bacause you say you don't use it for phone, right?)

The ARRIS TM520G will work fine with a router - did with my D-Link.

Pull the battery if you want. Comcsat shouldn't care even if you did have phone service where it would be needed for backup.

The Reset button(paperclip) does reset the modem,
Pulling power, even with the battery in, the modem dies completely!
Only the CDV circuits have power from battery.

First post, found you all googling the Arris TM502G modem I just got from Comcast.

Ok, I'm in Phila., PA, have cable TV and internet - NOT phone. I note this modem is for both internet and phone and has a battery. It appears that the battery is just for the phone if there's a power outage.

I'm older and old school - my way of "resetting" my modem is to just unplug it and not have to fish around with a pen in the reset button.

So, here's my question. Is it ok and allowed to just pull the battery from this modem? That way if I do need to reset it so I can connect my other computer to the internet, then reset and put it back to the main one (having horrible networking problems right now between 2 computers - network up 3 days then crash and have to to Chkdsk to just get 1 puter back online), I can just do the unplug modem, wait a minute, plug back in.

The router having a problem with is a Linksys WRT54G v2.2 wireless router (given to me about a year ago, so it may just be a bad egg) - note I am wired. Just bought a Netgear RP614v4 which is a wired router, but haven't tried networking with it yet. This is all really new to me! and I didn't set up the Linksys network, a tech did and will probably have to set up the new one for me. I am such a n00b.

Anyway, does anyone know if I can run this modem with the battery out or will Comcast throw a hissy fit of some sort. Thanks!
