Interesting..

So...what I've been
a)cautioning about
b)suggesting was very quickly happening...and
c)outright issuing continuing dire predictions about here at BBR..

is now all coming true.

Rick..just that lone voice out here in the BBR wilderness saying...you better watch out to the telco industry.
Saying..that docsis 3.0 is too damn easy to roll out now for a cable industry that has spent 100 billion bucks in 10 years on fiber/coax..

Saying it's too damn cheap for them to do it in comparison to everything else they've already spent...

Saying..it IS coming on fast..and in a big way.

Listen folks. That WILL be enough of the self congrats because that's not what I'm about.
What I am about however..and what we should ALL be about..is discussing the now huge potential ramifications of this.
And literally..how it can impact this country and these industries as a whole.

We should be about ELEVATING this conversation..and not some cable versus telco fanboy discussion.

I have talked about what is happening repeatedly..because I simply have seen it coming..and believe it is huge.
I believe it is the BBR scoop of the CENTURY.

Here are the questions I pose to you.
And I'm telling you..I don't have the answers myself.
I'm just trying to look ahead here at how this can impact the entire industry in a big way..really fast.

We've ALREADY seen Comcast CEO Roberts demoing this at 150,000k speeds.
As to what Comcast will do with this when it's rolled out remains to be seen..but IMHO..we are looking at 50,000k + speeds potentially..VERY quickly.

What is happening here is that the U.S. is finally catching up to the rest of the world in terms of speeds..and what consumers can expect.

And that is a GREAT thing.

I'm trying REAL hard to not mutter that A^^ word..but the other bigger question is..what then happens..to them?

Verizon..I'm not as concerned about. Because somewhere back when in the last 2 years ..i think they sat down and thought this through..the way I did when I started talking bigtime about this here on this site.

But what is going to happen when 50,000K + becomes the standard..and some other company who I won't name in this post..is running along at 1/40th those speeds for dsl and
1/5th on their next generation service?

Combine that with the landlines issue...and how the cable co's are growing there..
and folks..we have a VERY legitimate topic here to discuss..

and perhaps..the biggest BBR scoop of all time.

Again..I will state my position emphatically.
I am in support of COMPETITION.

I am NOT a cable "fanboy"..and reject that label.

I simply think that what is occurring here business wise..is huge. And technology wise..it's even bigger.

Because unless that other company who I won't name here decides..like yesterday..that they are suddenly in this game..

they are going to lose this game.

First , we aren't catching up. They are not going to offer 100 mbit unless they have to. It's all about cost. Giving a subscriber access to all the bandwidth they can crush a node or a pop.

These guys will offer 20 / 2 and say see we make users happy, while verizon went symmetrical. At&t forget , they make so much off business they could care less about u-verse, they own a huge footprint of a captive audience. They will not die because of the phone lines they have.

What you will see those little guys roll out , qwest embark , sprint to an extent , at&t is vdsl as far away from the pop as possible. Whether we like it or not , the people out in the further then suburbs just won't be getting any speed. Or not even possibly a net connection other then dial up. They will roll out vdsl in hopes of keeping customers happy by keeping things cheap. The cable co's will not lower rates , they have already shown they won't.

No one takes it to a telco vs cable besides yourself and the continued AT&T bashing.

That being said, I don't really see much news here. We know that cable companies will be rolling out Docsis 3 deployments.

It was discussed that a lot of people thought this would never happen and that Comcast merely drags their feet, so to speak. It's nice to see a quick and speedy DOCSIS 3.0 deployment. It's a win win for everyone.

The issue isn't just this deployment..but how very fast it's happened.
That to me signifies how quickly it's going to be happening in many places now.

As I have mentioned before, I think that this is not unlike what happened with DDR ram and how it made such a big mark on that industry.
Companies like Intel were supporting rambus bigtime..and arguably..that was the better alternative..
but..it was more expensive and they couldn't get it to market fast enough.

There are some VERY big questions here now waiting to be answered.
How fast will this deployment be?
How fast will they take speeds?
And then..how does that compare with whomever the competition is?

It's not just about that other company a^^....it's about anyone who these cable operators are competing with whomever the telco or other provider is.

IF..they're going to have 50,000k speeds..and be making that the standard..everything else is going to pale in comparison...EXCEPT..what verizon is doing.

Now..think about this. Comcast and other cable operators have already essentially priced landlines at zero as part of their bundles. And, companies like comcast have already opened those offers up to current customers as well.
Picture this for a moment.
50,000k speeds..digi tv..and landlines for 99 bucks.
Or 129. Or..whatever the number is.

What is the competition going to have to respond to that?

These are FAIR questions..looking out a bit into the future..and IMHO.the choice..as it stands today...becomes crystal clear.

I honestly hope that everyone here can rise above the juvenile discussion of being whatever fanboys one might be..
and say..as consumers..we WANT competition.
Good competition.

It is that which drives the best bargains for us..a consumers.
We should be able to say..if our provider sucks..we have a real choice.

AND..I FULLY recognize that for some..Comcast SUCKS.

And just can't get it right.

BUT..if the alternative just isn't going to compete..at all...and are going to sit on their butts and not spend the money they DO have today..
there simply will NOT be any competition.

And so..what I say here is..telco fanboys..and Comcast fanboys..and whomever fanboys together alike..
UNITE..
and call on the telco's..all of them..and particularly that one really really big one call Ma Bell..

to get with the program.

It is FTTH..or cease to exist.

I think that is coming.

Why? If you are happy with your provider no matter who it is at whatever tier etc then it should not matter.

Re: Interesting..

Well, I'm glad that you recognize that Comcast sucks for some people. Mind you, in the Comcast areas around where I live, they are behind other local cable providers in the area (that don't compete with each other directly but that's a different topic.)

However, you also forget that ATT still gets a lot of revenue off the wireless... although, to be fair, their 3g rollout isn't as widespread or well executed as VZ's.
