I was advised not to have the DSL modem to the authentication here:

Sacramento, CA		 Thanks. I've been authenticating at the modem for a while now with excellent success and no problems with port forwarding, which seemed to be the reason given there for authenticating at the router, so I think I'll stick with the way I have it now.
