| How to capture forum threads?
I find these forums most useful and lots of fun, too. I browse and occasionally participate in the Hughes.net and Sprint Mobile Broadband forums.
Often, I will want to save useful information from a particular thread. I try to do this using Adobe Acrobat's Web Capture, pointing to the thread's URL. I do this successfully on many other forums and web sites.
But, with dlsreports, the capture fails with "Error: Nothing Done. Authorization Failure." I am signed in to dslreports in a browser at the time.
Is there something I can do to successfully capture a forum thread?
Thanks for any help. |

| reply to Tokend Thanks, alc and roscoe. I didn't know about sitemark.
Hate to be obstinate, but the nice thing about Acrobat Web Capture is that it creates a single, self-contained PDF file. So, no Internet connection is needed to view the saved thread, and no extraneous files and folders are created.
But, it seems that Acrobat is hanging up in BBR's authorization protocol. Is there a way to satisfy the authorization requirements within Acrobat Web Capture?
Thanks. |

| Not sure if this is related.
If I try to fetch a dslreports page using "wget", there is an authorization failure. I think I could get it to work by telling "wget" to use a different browser identification header (pretend it is firefox). I think this site blocks wget requests.
I'm guessing, but it is possibly also blocking requests by your acrobat command. -- AT&T dsl; Westell 327w modem/router; SuSE 10.1; firefox 2.0.0.12 |

| Web Capture creates one multi-page PDF. You can page around as with any PDF. You can append additional web pages into the same PDF, if you want. Each capture creates a single PDF book mark, and however many pages.
Also, if there are clickable links (as captured from the original web site) within the PDF, you can click them in the PDF and add them to the original PDF file. You can do this whenever viewing the PDF, whether at the time of capture or later. Of course, you need to be online to the Internet for this to happen.
Incidentally, rosco's suggestion of printing to the PDF printer device works just dandy. So, if there's no other way of overcoming the authorization problem, this does the trick. Thanks, rosco! |

| Have you tied this rosco 's suggestion - create one file with .mht extension? If so, could you please provide us with size comparison (.mht file vs .pdf file)? Thanks -- Keep it simple, it'll become complex by itself... |

rosco Premium join:2003-11-10 USA | reply to Tokend I see, the clickable links to add to the pdf is a nice feature. |

| Yeah, and that's why beating the authorization snafu is preferable to printing to PDF. When you have a thread that consist of 5 or 6 web pages, you can just capture page 1 then click the "next page" button to get pages 2-6. It's all captured into one PDF file.
In contrast, printing to PDF means that you have to create 6 individual PDFs, with no linkage between them. Still, though, better than nothing. I don't know why I didn't think of it. Aside from mental feebleness, that is. |

| reply to OZO Yes, and that works. The only trouble is, it creates one html file, and a folder with all the files used by that page (graphics, etc.). It's all there, just not as neat and compact. And, if you should ever change the name of the html file, for example to sort and categorize your saved pages, you have to remember to make the same changes to the name of the files folder. |

rosco Premium join:2003-11-10 USA | is that button in your browser? |
