| [Phish] Hotmail Scam? Please help, I'm in severe distress I allow one of my bestfriends (A female) to have my password and access my hotmail, facebook etc whenever.
Today she did so, and she found numerous pornographic emails. They were received, and also responses...there were even things in the "sent" box.
I'm a deeply religious person, and love God's creation, and the beauty and respect of women, I couldn't ever do porn. But everything pointed to me, and suggests that I had been sending perverted emails to people via advertising websites. She herself is the same as me, and now I know our friendship is lost. She's my only true friend and it hurts so much not knowing how or what caused this.
I remember previously accidentally pressing a phishing email, or something similar but nothing had happened. Same on myspace and facebook. I really have no clue, as my password is incredibly difficult, and only two of us know it.
There are around 30 of these emails with responses, and I really have no answers as to how I received them, and supposedly replied to them.
Has such a phishing scam been heard of? I don't see any motive for a hacker to go into my account and have conversations with people, including one that included my age, many of my interests and a photo from facebook. I'm really on the verge of a breakdown, as she was literally and by name, my Star.
Any theories, or help? Sorry if this is the wrong section, I am so upset.

| Re: [Phish] Hotmail Scam? Please help, I'm in severe distress you received those emails just because. I get them, and many will tell you they've got them, and it's not because they responded to anyone. as far as them being sent, well, perhaps she answered a phish email and divulged the password and someone else has gained access. .
even tho she is/was a best friend, it's never good to give your password out. they can easily create their own email account for free at many places, including hotmail.
do not stress about it, try not to. it's just easier to delete the emails and not respond to them. hotmail is a good place to get these types of email. I read my hotmail account maybe once a month, and i have literally hundreds of spam and pr0n mail.
It would be wise to change your password immediately either way -- a time for change... | 1st & 10 | Ham is good

a. she did them b. you have multiple personalities and some of them are more riske. -- Ain't nuthin but the blues! "Albert Collins". Leave your troubles at the door! "Pepe Peregil" De Sevilla. Just Don't Wifi without WPA, "Yul Brenner"

All I will say is true friends trust and believe one another. Why would you lose her friendship if you had nothing to do with it? Say to her why would you even give her your password to access your account if you were into porn?
No reason to lose any friendship here if everything is on the level. I just don't get it where you say you know your friendship is lost. And as others have already mentioned, never give your password to anyone. Porn or no porn.

| You broke a basic security rule of computing; NEVER, EVER give anyone your password, PERIOD, for any reason.
I doubt that someone has broken in to your account. How many others have you given your password to? Has your "best friend" given your password to anyone?
I doubt the phishing email would have resulted in this either, unless you provided information to your account.
As already advised, change your password now! DO NOT give that new password out to anyone, PERIOD. -- Chris Living in Paradise!!

Sure, of course phishers take over the mailboxes of their victims & assume their victims identity. Nothing at all unusual about that, it is what they do after all. Financial gain is by far the most common motive but it's absolutely not the only motive. I've seen phishers take over a victims identity & their associated mail account to purchase services at places such as »www.livejasmin.com/ I've seen them use their victims names & pictures as their own for many different reasons. Look at how stupid these phishers look. I can hardly blame them for wanting to look like someone else. I have little doubt that you are a victim, I'm just not sure if it's victim to a phisher or victim of getting busted, but you do deserve to be believed. The least common of the activities you've mentioned is the phisher did not change the password to the mail account he hijacked. Now if it turns out that the password was changed by someone other than yourself & you managed to take back control of the mail account at some later point then your credibility just went to 100%. At any rate, it's not common but I've seen what you described happen ~half a dozen times over an equal amount of years. Whatever the case is one thing remains true. Be more careful with your stuff.

1 edit | Re: [Phish] Hotmail Scam? Please help, I'm in severe distress Thank you so much for your responses.
The only knowledge I have of a phishing scam I had accidentally clicked was on myspace, but that was about a year ago.
The only other thing I can think of is last year someone had a keylogger with firefox, but I thought I had deleted all of this. They didnt seem malicious though, so I'm not sure if its for victim identity
What can I do other then change passwords/emails? Please can I have proof of such scams, cos my friend really doesn't believe me, and I havent eaten or slept since.
The worse thing though, is that at the time of her finding out and messaging me calling me a pervert, was about the time the messages disappeared off the actual hotmail interface, apart from one that was left from yesterday that I found just now.
I use outlook which is on 24/7 with protection & avast and asus additional protection to stop spam, and i have a spam/profanity filter too, so I'm guessing thats why I haven't noticed the emails.
What options do I have? | |

1 edit | Re: [Phish] Hotmail Scam? Please help, I'm in severe distress Again, never ever give out your password to anyone. Sometimes, the best explanation to a problem is the simplest one. As the other posters mentioned, she may be deliberately responsible for sending out those emails, she may have given out the password, her computer may have been compromised and the password leaked out to the rest of the hacking/phishing/scamming community, etc. This type of phishing/hacking activity happens all the time.
I used to work at the Fraud/Abuse department of an ISP, and there have been instances of accounts compromised, with over 300+ new email addresses (!) added on the account, all used to send out 419/phishing/spamming email messages. I'm afraid that all that protection you mentioned you have on your computer won't defend you from the weakest aspect of all in computer security: the human aspect.
