How can they stay in business..I'll never know.
They stay in business because there are folks like us who have no other choice than to use their over-priced 'broadband' service. I bet ya that even Hughes corp women & men don't use this service.

I was a hn subscriber until Friday. I've talk to sales, upgrade.and billing. No one seems to know what the policies really are. Here is a small problem I have had with them. The warrenty on the modem when i upgraded. I was told before and after I bought it it was a 3 year warrenty.
I had a problem on friday the 10 of Oct. I was told the the warrenty was up Feb. 26 of 2009. I upgraded on sept of 07.
thats what 15 months. I asked billing what's going on she told me the warrenty is only good as long as the contract.
I asked when is my contract up the said feb 26, 2009.
I asked how much was it to cancel it she said $300.00.
I told her that more than my monthly payments ( I know its not) she said she'll look at my contract. I was on hold for 20 min when she cam back she said my contract was only extended for 5 months. I asked then about the warrenty she said it was still good un the date she provided. I asked her, I thought it was only good until the contract was up.
I got three different responses to this minor thing. Two from the same person! This is not the first time. More like the 6th!! I swear, and this is the minor one! Not one person ( Billing, up-Grades, and tech) know what is policy is. Even in the supervisors I get different responses. How can they stay in business..I'll never know. Sorry didn't log in correclty

I understand satellites and I understand Hughesnet is making billions. They are not losing money and don't try and convince me they are... i don't like it anymore than you do,but that still don't change the fact that posting in this forum does nothing to change the fact that hughes is very badly oversold their bandwidth, and they are not going to boot customers,or add satts. for a dying service that wont be around in 10 years or less

so the only thing we can do while we wait for dsl,or cable is stop worrying about it and kept using it,or go back to dial up,or just move to a area that has dsl or cable.in which we all know is very hard to do right now.i have been trying sell my house for a year now finally took it off the market till the economy gets better, and i can tell you from experience that hughes is better than dialup.i tried to go back to dialup last year try that and you will crawl back to hughes in a hurry, sorry dude that's just how it is.this is the price we pay for living out of town

"Trying to get help with 12.0 Mbps "

What does that have to do with Hughesnet?

I wish I'd never heard of Hughes Sat. It's the biggest rip off and headache anyone can experience. The speeds suck, the customer support is a joke. They will automatically take payments not approved out of your credit card and when you tell them you didn't authorize auto payments they inform you it cost $5 a month to receive a paper bill!! Trying to get help with 12.0 Mbps after upgrading from the Home plan to the Pro plan was the stupidest thing we've ever done. No one to talk to that speaks English and your asked for your name at least 10 times per call and still no answers. They should be stopped, this is completely ridiculas. Paying $70 a month for NOTHING has got to be stopped. I'm with anyone that wants to take a stand against this SCAM.

If you are having speed issues, find an installer to change your frq or satellite.

Has anyone ever attempted to gain access to the advanced pages of their modem? I know I was allowed access to the pages once after fighting with Direcway(Hughes Net) Customer support tier 3 support.

HughesNet is a service provider that provides internet to rural areas of the United States. For some, it is the only option. They are providing a quality of service to over 300k customers. Yes HughesNet is not like DSL or Cable, but it is a better option than dialup other than the few that are having FAP issues, equipment issues, or gateway issues.

There is a daily limit on HughesNet which is not a horrible thing, but not a great thing. Satellite Bandwidth is very expensive and none of you understand that. You expect everything to be like DSL or Cable. Your expectations are too high and you need to appreciate that you do have an option.

If you are not satisfied with your speeds and stuck in a contract, try to get an installer than knows what he is doing and he will find you a satellite that works better than what you are on. Because that is usually the problem or a simple equipment issue. If you are not under contract and still complaining, stop complaining, cancel your service and find another product that you can complain about.

Bottom line, HughesNet is an option for Broadband internet service no matter where you live in the United States. Be thankful that we live in a country that does have options. And yes every corporation has goods and bads. Any company that has thousands of customers are going to have complaints, do research on verizon, sprint, or ATT complaints and see if they are all happy!!!

I think the biggest thing that gripes me about Hughes is the way they advertise. Their ads are very misleading and in truth a person shouldn't have to read the "fine print" with a magnifying glass. With Hughes, you even have to read between the lines.

When we first got Hughesnet it had its problems such as crap customer support, downtimes due to "web accelerator" and other nonesense but we didn't complain much, we were averaging 700kb/s down and about 128 up... since then we upgraded to the 1mb/s (pro)plan... but in the pat 6 months it has gotten so bad, we are now averaging 100kbs on a good day and sometimes as bad as 50-70kb/s down. This is not acceptable... there should be an FCC law against them being able to oversell there sats so highly... what can I do to get them to fix the problem and give us back a reasonable speed? They said if we averaged under 300kbs they would do something(so far they haven't)

Thanks for any ideas... if anyone else lives in the 13316(camden ny) area please feel free to let me know how your hughesnet is working out
is hughes perfect no,but it is much better than dialup if you dont believe it go back to dialup and see for yourself.i tried to go back to dialup, and it really sucks no home network,no talking on the phone, and wont load pages

hughes is not that bad, sure it slows down during peak times, and the fap is way to low,but it is better than your other option yall are not going to change anything with hughes, your just wasting your time they have us,and there is nothing we can do about it,but move, use evdo in which has a worse cap than hughes, and they charge you if you go over on it,or go back to dialup

hughes time will come someday when we all have cable, dsl, ftth, and they will go under, but till that day we will have to put up with it or cancel service with them all the winning in here will not change the fact that we dont have many other options, and will certainly not change satt. broadband because it is so limited on bandwidth its all they can give us surely you cant expect a company to not add more customers, they are going to make there money while they can.we may not ever see that day ,but satt. broadband will not be around forever

MtnFolk2 good tip.
I just don't know what I should say.
My service has never been good and we started nov 07 on the 27th.
Now they say I am out of warrenty and my problem won't be fixed unless I pay.

I complained at least once a month but always got a run around.
Most of the time I never understood what the people were saying.

UGH.

SatManWorkin;
I am not sure I agree with the legal route that "hughesnet sucks", but I guess it is the "American Way".
However, to be fair' he said "like RS&I", with "like" meaning "similar to". I imagine he might mean a company similar to RS&I.
I will be interested to see how this all plays out. One thing for sure...I too have the greatest respect for (most) of the installers who keep Hughesnet operational.
Regards,
Bob

RS&I does not cover KY.

If you are going to start something like this you should at least get the basic facts straight.

You said: " Hughes has more than enough money to launch 10 - 20 satellites or more if they actually felt like it, but our money seems to make better toilet paper than being used for what it should and applied towards something that was/is actually useful or beneficial."
Where do you come up with this nonsense? At about $500 million EACH, you are talking about well over 5 Billion dollars!!! The net worth of HughesNet barely supported sending one of them up.
What on earth are you doing trying to run a gaming/emulation website on satellite internet?

You sound like the classic "I forgot to do any investigation prior to making the purchase" type ...the neon signs were/are there for all to see - Bulletin: SATELLITE INTERNET IS NOT ANY GOOD FOR GAMERS, HEAVY UPLOADERS AND ANY OTHER 'EXTREME' USERS!!

Can Hughesnet Really be Classified a Broadband provider? The Term implies to me the ability with reasonable speed to enjoy the multimedia and services the internet and web has to offer. With a FAP on the average of 350meg one can hardly accomplish any of this? Streaming audio, video cannot for the most part be enjoyed. Downloading movies impossible. Sites with high graphical and antimated content a huge danger. And According to Crystal the tech at hughes even downloading news articles as one might do in reshearch an huge impact on the FAP.

I signed up around Jan 2008. It was not bad at first, but became increasingly slower as the months went by. I saw a posting here regarding March as the poster's observation of the time it got worse. I feel March was also about the same here. I've been in IT since 1973, so I can establish "trends" in my mind regarding these thing pretty well, IMHO.
My take on this is that Hughes has "oversold" bandwidth something akin to airlines "overbooking" flights. Not being privy to an overview of their system, I would at least state that Hughes' has problems on what I will call the "Backhaul". By this I mean that the "front end", the connection between subscriber and satellite, is working quite well (actually I'm a bit impressed how 1 watt can make it back up to the transponder tens of thousands of miles above the Earth....cellphones are about half that and look at their range....although the parabolic dish antenna really helps (way more gain), I admit).
I regress.....sorry.....

I think the problem is either too much traffic on the satellite, or simply too much traffic on at their ground-station, connecting to the Internet.

I suppose that if the latter was true, by now Hughes would
have fixed it by increasing the "backhaul" capabilities on the ground. The problem I have is that it just seems to look like the latter is the crux of the problem but, as I've stated, I'm not privy to their internal networking architecture.

Anyway, I have spoken with, and emailed David Leezon of RS&I, the distributor and top of fulfillment for Hughesnet in the "Great Lakes" region. I at first asked for his help, but he was "out of town" and promised to get back to me. After waiting to see if the service improved, I emailed him as a courtesy advance notice of my plan to fix this for everyone......
My plan:
I'm married to a lawyer, so it will cost me next to nothing to get everyone in paper.....
I intend on publishing small classified ads in rural newspapers nationwide seeking unhappy Hughesnet subscribers.
Once I get enough verifiable complaints, then we get a judge to agree to a class-action suit against Hughes.
I feel that will be easy given the number of subscribers, and the fact that so many schoolchildren are at a considerable disadvantage compared to children with a reliable connection. This is the true impetus driving me here.....the kids. When I first subscribed to Hughesnet, I was actually pleased with the "latency" issue (time from earth to satellite and back) thinking that it created a scenario that allowed the kids to be at par with their internet access for educational and social contact, but would find online gaming practically impossible.

Hughes recently has rolled out HN9000, which is a "spot beam" system. I feel that is must be their answer to a possible satellite bandwidth issue with 7000 and 6000 systems.

All the above aside, I suggest you contact your regional distributor/fulfillment provider. Start with »www.rsiinc.com......if RS&I don't have your account, then they will be more than happy to turn you over to the provider in your locale....

One thing about the installation/service bit.......
Hughes contracts with someone like RS&I for the region.
then......
RS&I contracts with someone like Guardian in a local area (mine being central KY)
then......
Guardian finally contracts with the guy that actually does the work, and he gets a flat $50.00 per call.......is paying $4.00 / gall on for fuel to drive a truck to help you out.

I know this because attended Hughesnet certification class, and decided to stay out of the fray. God Bless the guy that comes to your house, he's the only one that actually works for a living.....and he really cares about you.

Post your complaints on ripoffreport dot com and I will be filing some paper on Hughes, and their distributors if they try to stonewall us on this......

I was switched to this satellite on 23 June 08. I'm getting lousy downloads during the 1900-2400 time frame (EDT). Speeds are generally 60-90 down and 25-40 up. Early in the morning, I'm getting 790 down and 196 up. I've sent a long letter accompanied by data to Hughes Corporate with a copy of all the info to the FCC. I will see if I can complain to the BBB of Maryland as well per suggestions on this forum.
