| Slow Broadband Speeds
Hi. I recently upgraded my Broadband from 2mb to 8mb. At first, I was achieving download speeds up to around 550kb/s but now all I manage is 130kb/s at best. My best time of the day to download has always been between 2am and 6am, and outside these hours the speed can drop to only 20 to 30kb/s. I was getting faster speeds on 2mb broadband. Ive downloaded Dr.TCP but haven't really got a clue what I'm doing. I recently had to use the recovery disc after I downloaded and used a Registry Cleaner program. Unfortunately it cleaned more than it was meant to and the pc would only boot in Safe Mode. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Here are answers to the ten points you require. Unfortunately I don't know what No.6 is.
1. Tweaks test »/tweakr/block:···a=normal
2. Speed tests San Fransisco CA Last Result: Download Speed: 985 kbps (123.1 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 373 kbps (46.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
New York City Last Result: Download Speed: 995 kbps (124.4 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 380 kbps (47.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
3. Line Quality test »/linequality/nil/2359369
4. Internet connection Product: Tiscali MAX - Up to 8Mb Broadband We estimate the maximum speed your line can support is between 6Mb - 8Mb (After line test on Tiscali Site) USB ADSL WAN ADAPTER SAGEM FAST 800 E2T
5. If DSL, do you use PPPoE connection software? (Do you have to connect to the Internet?) YES
6. If PPPoE, which one -- WinPoet, Enternet, RASPPPoE, WinXP Native, etc? DON'T KNOW
7. Which operating system you use? Windows XP Media Centre Edition. Version 2002. Service Pack 2 AMD Athlon 64 x 2 Dual Core Processor 3800+2.01 GHz, 768 MB RAM
8. What your advertised speeds are: 8MB download, speeds up to 448kbps upload.
9. Not on a network
10. No Router

| If you can only boot in safe mode, then I would start with a clean install of the OS.
Or try a system restore to a point before you used the reg cleaner. You might get lucky. -- "You can observe a lot by watching". Yogi Berra |

| reply to stav I Second Irish Shark 's advise... You Need to resolve your problems with the OS First.
Once you have that taken care of, then re-run the Tweak Test, and use "8000" instead of "8mb" in the Download Speed kbit/s: dialog box, and "pppoA" in the Connection: dialog box for a more accurate evaluation.

(Edit): Corrected info for your SAGEM FAST 800 E2T Modem (Uses pppoA). -- If You're Unsure, "RTFM"... If You're SURE, "RTFM" Anyway. |

| Thank you both for your replies. Im sorry, but you misunderstood me about only booting in safe mode. That was BEFORE I used the recovery disc. My PC is like new again now - in fact it was probably a blessing because Ive gotten rid of all the junk, plus Ive now got the latest versions of most of the software I had before! Im sorry if I misled you. Because its after 4am now, I'l do another Tweak test at a more civilised time of the day and post again later. Thanks again, Stav |

You are just getting slower results on the USA sites.
I don't see any issues here. -- "You can observe a lot by watching". Yogi Berra |

join:2008-03-07 | reply to Irish Shark If my tests are good can you think of why I can only download at 130kb/s at 3am well outside peak times?
When I 1st upgraded I was getting 550-600kb/s at the same time of day.

These have always been faster in the early hours of the morning.

| You may want to try changing your RWIN to 124960 by using Dr.TCP, and see if that offers any improvement... Other than that, your settings are "Tweaked" about as best as possible.
The only other thing that you can do, is to contact your ISP, and see if they can investigate the issue.
