NE OHio slowed to a crawl again

Paying for Turbo, getting about 1/20th of that. I won't even bother posting the speed test results. No, there's nothing apparent in a traceroute. TW just plain sucks. Sort of OT, but they can't do HD TV properly either. I'm on my 4th box and none of them even support HDMI.

Same issue here ... the last two weeks or so, the connection has been going to pot after about 5PM or so until around midnight. Speed tests to CA are under 1mbps, Chicago/NYC hover between 1.5 and 2mbps.

I called and talked to a level 3 tech, who said an engineer would look into it and get back to me at the end of next week.... I'm not holding out too much hope.

Things seem slightly better tonight for me; speed tests are coming in at around 6mbps out of the 15 I'm supposedly paying for.

However, things still went downhill sometime between 4:30 and 6:00 or so, and transfers seem to start and stop randomly throughout...

Anyone else having a similar experience tonight?

About the same for me. This presents itself exactly like the issue that started last summer and went on for several months. TW sucks and won't commit the resources to supply advertised service to the old Adelphia customers.

Does that "up to" mean that there is any issue that is worthy of comment or concern other than a modem that won't sync?

When there is no condition under which 15 mbit can be delivered, advertised service is not being delivered. When speeds slow to 1/10th of what they were a day ago, something is wrong.

Most likely, seriously crappy weather. A weeks worth of freezing rain and snow.

Give the technicians a chance to make repairs.

It rains and snows all the time - in the Pacific Northwest almost every day for months on end. In New England, they can have 3-4 feet of snow at a time. Do the connections slow down like this in those places...every winter?

This is now the third time in 18 months that the Adelphia/TW people in NE Ohio have seen prolonged, noteworthy slowdowns in their service. the previous two times the problems lasted for months and were mostly not even acknowledged.

Sorry, they just suck. Any bets on how long it will take for this problem to be fixed?

And hurricanes in Florida and Ice storms in Rochester...

And yes. Severe weather can damage a cable plant.

And there was damage.

I can't say specifically, your market took a beating, but there were flooded head ends, power outages and fiber down in Ohio.

It does happen.

It's easy to get cynical given TW/Adelphia's history in NE Ohio. But it's even easier to post those issue on the Network status page assuming they were responsible for the slowdown.

Just adding my experience - upgraded to Turbo 2 days ago and averaging around 3-4Mb/s down. Brunswick, OH (Cleveland suburb).

The network status page (»help.rr.com/HMSLogic/network_status.aspx) has vague info all the way near the bottom of the page about the situation. Oddly, some of the info is dated for the future! I can understand a future entry when they have some type of planned maintenance but what am I to think when on 3/14/2008 it says for 3/18/2008:

"Road Runner is currently [emphasis added]experiencing issues with the cable network. Subscribers in the affected area(s) may experience a loss of connectivity, usually indicated by flashing modem lights and/or a loss of video service. Our engineers are working quickly to resolve this issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."

And how to interpret:
"IMPACTED DIVISION(S): TW-NEO-OHIO IMPACTED FACILITIE(S): OH-RDC IMPACTED NODE(S): OH-RDC-NOT AVAILABLE"

Some of the entries just have:
"PLEASE PROVIDE THE NAME OF THE CITY/SUBDIVISION WHERE THE OUTAGE OCCURS. PLEASE BE MORE SPECIFIC THAN JUST TW-DIVISION NAME. EXAMPLES: CITY OF LOS ANGELES, NORTH EAST OHIO - WHITE OAKS SUBDIVISION, ETC. GENEVA HUBSITE" for a location!

I'm paying for 7MBPs internet with TW, and have hade them for about 3 months. I knew they would be trouble because it took over a month just to get service connected in the first place! Here's my speed test result as of 11:10AM EST on 3/14/08:

It gets worse as the day progresses, and of course I know that unlike DSL, I share the internet with others... but it is ridiculous to pay a lot for speeds that can be gotten thru DSL, and a dedicated one at that.

I also have both cable & phone thru them, and the phone has been a disaster. Often, the line does not work at all. I'm just thankful I've not had to make a call to 911 or we would all be dead. The phone often loses its connection, so although you hear a dial tone, your call does not go out or rings busy. (I call my cell phone to verify that it is TW and not the person I'm calling who has probs.) When people call us, they often get a "due to network difficulties" msg, and their call does not go through.

We have called tech support many times about the internet speed, the inability to play online when we pay for high speed access, and the fact that the phone line rarely works, but after spending hours with clueless tech support (once you actually get a live person on the line), we are looking for another provider.

For the most part, unplugging the modem, restarting the PC, and then releasing/renewing the IP address resolves these problems, but who wants those hassles when it's supposed to be an "always on" connection, and when you have to restart everything when you're in the middle of something?

Unfortunately, it seems that TW owns the area (monopoly), but with all the bad service we're paying for, it's time we look into other cable internet/bundle providers if one can be found, or even DSL providers that can at least give us a more stable service.

Quite frankly, if the service was great, we could care less what tech support is like -- we wouldn't need them. But to have both shoddy service and lacking support with cable/internet/phone, all for over $120 a month? it's just not worth it.

I only wish we could go back to the provider we had in PA for 7yrs (before we moved here to OH): Armstrong One Wire. They offered a lot more for a lot less. Hope they get service in my area one day soon, for I will be the first one to sign back up!

EDIT: HA! Talk about perfect timing! Just as I was attempting to post this, I lost connection & had to restart/reset everything. Luckily, I have learned from past experience to copy what I've typed before submitting it, in case the connection goes down. Let's try submitting this a second time...

i have been experiencing this since feb. 26th 2008. i have been on the phone with lvl 3 tech support now at least 20 times. i've had 4 cable techs out and the first one to find something wierd was the guy i had yesterday. doesnt really matter what time it is here in ashtabula, just all random times, the system would slowly lose speed. yesterday it started around 3pm. the guy came out around 2p and i asked him if he could come back later after some of his other appointments. well... he did stop back at 3.30p and with in 1 hour went from 15mb down to 6mb and thats at my tap. he went down to my node and ripped another speed test and that was down to 5mb. (i'm lucky, i live like 300ft from the node) told me that he needs to escalate the issue to the networking department. so... we'll see what happens next i guess.

i have been keeping documentation and screen shots of every speed test and who i spoke to, what time and blah blah blah since the end of february. if its not resolved soon i will be pulling the cable drop off the pole and contacting the bbb. 3 weeks with not acceptable service and being told by script readers that its my equipment at fault is a bunch of crap. i have taken my equipment ot my parents house to test to make sure its not mine before i started my (b)itch fest on them. also connected my laptop to the cable modem straight to the drop outside with the same results.

i wish they would get a friggin clue and fix their mistake!

i was however told by another tech who swapped out my dvr for the hd-dvr that they are working on rolling out docsis 3.0 and upgrading turbo people to 20m/1.5m. so... if that is true maybe thats why we are all experiencing issues.
