| That's awesome logic. I might as well go take my neighbor's car tonight for a late night drive through Atlanta. They're not going to need it, they're sleeping.
And I'm sure there's no way the bank could use all that money they have in their vault. As long as I can make my wallet fatter right?

| Thank you. Users are responsible for educating themselves. I would imagine most of us lock our house and car doors before leaving them unattended. This really is not so different. Every router sold from the manufacturer comes with instructions on how to secure it. And if that's not enough there's free tech support 24/7. My Linksys manual strongly recommended setting up the encryption. Probably even states in the fine print that comes with the gadget that if you don't secure it, you're responsible for what happens. If you didn't take the time to protect yourself, the only one responsible is you. -- UNLESS Someone like you cares a whole awful lot, Nothing is going to change... It's not

Mark I love speed bumps, just drive over them in suv at regular speed and nothing happenes. Photo radar are easy to win especially when they are issued on business vehicle name. I don't go out of my way to use anyones wifi, but if my computer can associate and get an ip from my bedroom, with no fancy tactics on my part, then its the neighbors bad for broadcasting to my home.

I have too many WiFi neighbors in my area that WiFi from my own machine is useless (too much interference), and of course, it kills my Bluetooth headset. I stick to the Netgear HDX-101 for connectivity... less issues running SSH/Remote desktop. -- Canada = Hollywood North

These give me 100Mbps anywhere in my house (85Mbps throughput due to 100Mbps ports) »www.netgear.com/Products/Powerli···101.aspx -- Canada = Hollywood North

| IEEE needs to be shot for not having variable/dynamic/on the fly changing transmit power. APs/wifi clients dont reduce their transmit power when they are closer. That causes serious wifi pollution problems. Goto Union Square in NYC, I get about 1000 APs, none of them connectable. | |

LOL nice. But I got you pwn'd. Athlon 600mhz 256mb & PFSENSE running 6 NICs.
Problem I have is due to seeing 38 different networks (or 48 if I use the big grid) I get a lot of interference. Damn channel 6 and it's 20 APs!
Also 60mbps is a bit crazy considering 38mbps is DOCSIS payload max. You must have neighbors on different nodes? How do you share the lines (wifi? then isn't 10mbps about the max you can pull?)

Also 60mbps is a bit crazy considering 38mbps is DOCSIS payload max. You must have neighbors on different nodes? How do you share the lines (wifi? then isn't 10mbps about the max you can pull?) Not only wireless , we have wires buried to the 2 houses next to me. My wifi comes from the 2 local school buildings they are new schools and offer open wifi in the library. They are linked with a ds3 to the city. Kind of slow about 18 mbit. And we have an apartment complex behind me. They have service included in the cost of the condo I don't even know the speed I am told its comcast but like a hotel system where you just plug in an ethernet cable.
But 2 friends on Comcast 1 On EVDO 1 in the Condo and the 2 local schools. we are all on the 8/768 option , the condo alone I can get 12 mbit , the 2 schools tap out at 18 each at night. They are wireless g not encrypted. With powerboost (when it works) and the cable connections we can hit 48 or 50 mbit. The wireless links only add at nite and the evdo is really just a back up in case comcast and the schools go down. They tend to go down around the same time a lot, but show different ips. and the ips dont show to be owned by comcast. -- "It's always funny until someone gets hurt......and then it's absolutely friggin' hysterical!"

| I've only managed to use my neighbors in times of TW being down (they have DSL). I envy you, seriously. Aren't you afraid one day they are going to watch Oprah, hear the evils of unprotected wi-fi and encrypt their routers?
Don't let the ninnies here give you flack, they're just as jealous as I am and are too uptight to admit it. Frankly, if the connection is open, what's the harm of sending your packets across it. Who is damaged by your neighbors acts of unintentional kindness? Certainly not the @ssr@ping cable companies who charge $57 a month for those who have the nerve to purchase "unbundled" such as I do.
