anon : Yes that is exactly what I hear. I had an Outside DSL filter installed but that only added 4000ft to my line. Taking that off now I just have a filter to the fax line and my DSl is direct to the outside hub. I can hear the modem as it starts to sync up (beeps and such) then the constant white noise when its completely synced. it never used to do this and I do have 2 used modems on the way to test and mess with. But what pisses me off the most is that it was completely silent while the tech was here.. then not 20min later its back to its old shinanagins.

Damn Goast in the Machines...

RealoRc : I had the same problem and I never knew dsl modems actually sounded like old dialup modems trying to connect.
I forgot how the tech could detect the problem with their tools. I already had a second phone line going into my room, that wasn't in use, so the tech went outside and set that line for dsl. I believe he installed an outside line filter, only voice goes to the normal line and dsl+voice goes to the one in my room. He made it the same phone line.

Have you tried rebooting the modem with the phone on? I pushed any digit on the phone to get rid of the dialtone so you could hear the dsl modem better.

I can hear my DSL on the phone...

anon : Ok so to start this out. It must be some law or rule that every time I have a tech for either phone or DSL come out. The problem will magicly disapear for the duration that he is on the premise. It is just the same with normal computer issues for others when I walk into the room, they vanish.

Anyway with my luck I am stuck with semi decient lines atm (which will go bad at the next rain where I will call the phone guy and make him come out and fix it while the problem is evident). The problem I wanted and thought was fixed today is now back like before only hours after having a DSL guy from Covad come out and try to figure out whats going on.

The problem I am having is I can hear my DSL on the phone that is on the same line. This is our houses dedicated Fax line. There is only 1 wall jack with 2 hookups. One is for the DSL and the other is for the fax machine. It is less then 5ft of cable length from the outside hub to the inside wall outlet. I have tested inside with different phones and they all come up the same. Every phone can hear the DSL as its syncing up and online. Today Of Course while the tech was here was the only time I could not hear anything (Like its been for the past 5 years). What in the world could be causing it and why in the heck would it not be audible only during the time the tech was here? Its like the DSL gods don't want me to have access to their great resource anymore.

I read on the Earthlink FAQ that it could be something in the CO. But since there was no issue today, there was no reason for the tech to check it out.

My margines are a tad low so I am stuck in safe mode (I'm blaming the bad part of the phoneline that they can't detect since its dried up here for the moment.) but they were good right before he left. (he said 10 was acceptable and I had 13-14db Ddownload 26db Upload ) It worked like a champ all this morning right till about 30min after he left then it went back to its crappy ways.

So there is my detailed question/report. Would anyone know anything about this and have any ideas on what too do? I do have a new Zyxel P645 on its way as well as a Broadxent 8012 V-1 which the tech said was a good modem, just so I can't blame it completey on my modem. (if I can then well I will hopefully have 2 replacements) I just want this thing to work like it has for the last 5 years. Nothing makes you appreciate good internet like not having it consistantly or quickly for a few months.
