| Changes to Sympatico bandwidth plans
As of the 10th of March, everything regarding bandwidth plans will change in sympatico: (this is from internal postings)
As of March 10th there will be a stop-sell implemented on the $25 Unlimited Usage Plan. The Unlimited Usage Plan will still be available in your ordering tools until further notice; however, we ask that you not sell this plan to a customer under any circumstance.
We currently have in place a monthly $30 maximum charge for any usage overage charges our customers may incur. As of June 30th, 2008 we will be grandfathering all plans that have been sold with a $30 max charge. ONLY new customer acquisitions as of June 30th, 2008 will be subject to usage charges without monthly billing limits ($30 max charge no longer applicable). |

@bell.ca | reply to bigpimpin It's been a long day, so can someone confirm that the 30 $ overage charge is going to be replaced (new customers) as of June 30th with unlimited "usage charges"?
Sorry if I read that wrong, it just seems crazy. |

To this day there are many that aren't aware bell throttles, months passed before they knew of a "do not migrate list", Reps still tell people its unlimited, and it goes on...
Something like this should take about 2-3 months before 10% of the reps are aware. give it 6-10 months for them to know.
Situation normal for Bell. |

But true ... lots of leaks from these ISPs never actually seem to find the light of day. Sometimes, I think they float a leak deliberately to see what the reaction might be! |

| DKS, as long as ISPs play this hide the truth game about what constitutes reasonable bandwidth consumption having for years gone with unenforced caps and while 3rd party ISPs continue to be able to offer very high bandwidth consumption caps, there is going to be a LOT of disbelief about what REALLY constitutes a bandwidth hog.
After all the 3rd party ISPs don't have the advantage of volumes of low bandwidth consumers to offset the heavyweights, yet they continue to be able to offer this service and more, at lower cost! They aren't operating at a loss either!
Moreover, economies of scale should apply here.
So, I really don't think it's fair to simply say "Stop being a bandwidth hog" There's way more to this. I think that in part it's a "We're going to do it because we can get away with it as a way to improve the bottom line without a lot of screaming" ... as in we can cope with a few thousand upset people when we've got several million subscribers.
Something is decidedly wrong here, and it's all to easy to impact the customer to fix the problem.
It's like transit services ... They increase fares because they're not getting enough passengers. The passengers who now are paying more than they want for transit go to their cars, because the price and inconveniences of transit are too much. So, now we have fewer riders again, so now they have fewer passengers, so they put the prices up again and a new lot of riders abandon transit.
Spot the flaw!
While internet services aren't quite the same, there's still the logic of "There's something wrong here, so we'll fix the problem by reducing service and increasing price. But they still haven't fixed the real problem, only masked it. The fortunate (or unfortunate depending on how you look at it) thing for ISPs is that it still hasn't reached peak market penetration so they can get away with masking the problems for a while yet. |
