[TWC] TWC SoCal speed upgrades information

I was speaking to a very helpful billing tech from the Ontario (California) call center just now. She informed me that all remaining speed upgrades in southern California should be completed by sometime in June (but she didn't have a specific date). I was told that I should keep an eye to my bill as to the dates and exact speeds of this upgrade plan.

Just thought I would update everyone.

400kbps more is not an upgrade

New LE & Tap
I have a pretty good feeling this is true.

If you look at the Network Status pages, you can see Time Warner is doing a crapload of work. There are blurbs of "decongestion projects", and new 1ghz C-COR nodes all over the place.

Time Warner just completely re-deployed my whole neighborhood (with appropriate notice, thanks TW). My service just came back online. As I type this, there is still a swarm of TWC trucks going all over the neighborhood doing lord knows what. It's just like when they first upgraded my area to two-way service.

They did this a couple months ago at my Mom's house in Tujunga as well.

I snapped a picture of the new LE and tap that they just installed in front of my house. This new LE is MUCH smaller than the one it replaced. New signal levels are almost identical to the old ones.

They also have just renamed "Extreme" to "Turbo".

So wait a sec. If they are changing extreme to turbo, does that mean we get a speed downgrade, or what?

Now I am officially confused.

Re: [TWC] TWC SoCal speed upgrades information

I'm hoping that means we'll eventually be like San Diego: 10/1 standard, 15/2 "Turbo". But with Time Warner, only God knows. LOL.

I so could use the boost on upload it's not even funny. FTP'ing a 2gb plus file to my server on 1mb upload is PAINFUL.

Isn't it currently 6/512kbps for 'standard' and 10/1 for 'extreme'? 10/1 for 'standard' would kick butt, especially if the pricing remained the same.

They just moved us from 6/512 standard to 10/1 standard and 15/2 turbo

Re: [TWC] TWC SoCal speed upgrades information

Impressive... I'll have to see if the prices don't skyrocket with it.

I'll wait until my DTV and wireless AT&T are up this summer before migrating... but in general, I've had enough of AT&T B.S.
AT&T will only qualify me for 'Express' 1536/384kbps on DSL unless I stay on with DSL-Extreme, even though my line stats are good

I don't expect them to. Their HSI pricing is relatively high compared to AT&T and Verizon. TW actually reduced the price of Extreme sometime last year (before I switched). The cable companies in general seem to want to compete by upping speed rather than lowering prices.

Re: [TWC] TWC SoCal speed upgrades information

Yeah, I've seen the typical difference in pricing for cable to be 'keep the price, increase the speed', while DSL has been 'typically' low cost, lower speed options. Of course, Uverse prices aren't cheap, and DSL prices have shot up $5-$10/month, depending on package.

Just to chime in on this. I just spent 45 mins with some very helpful guys (started at the bottom and went to Tier 3). From what he found out, names are shifting so for people like myself who were former Adelphia sitting on the mostly unknown 8mbps/512 package, this is now known as Extreme. Turbo just got pushed out officially and its 10/1 for West Los Angeles. Didnt bother to get the price because I'm honestly not willing to pay more than the $50 I pay now for 'extreme.'

As we all know, if you are in a market with fiber then they offer more competitive packages but otherwise thats what you can get. Frustrating as I always hit the current cap so I could clearly go faster if they removed it, but eh not going to pay for another 2mbps (though the upload would be wonderful).

I originally called because when I spoke to sales today for a friend, in the unit next to mine, they told him that 10/1 was available as 'extreme' and that set me off on this quest to figure out wtf was going on with my 8/512 'extreme.' Tier3 had to go to his help desk but the conclusion was that sales just didnt yet know about the name change and most likely they were selling more than they could deliver (shocking). Normally I'd scream bloody murder over the false advertising but West LA is such a mess right now because of all the regional differences I actually believe it was a genuine mistake.

Hope this helps.

Re: [TWC] TWC SoCal speed upgrades information

I've had 10/1 for several months with excellent performance. Yet, they just completely replaced all of the equipment in my area. I don't think they'd go through all of the expense to replace the equipment if there weren't further planned upgrades in store. Time Warner has standardized on 15mbps "Turbo" downloads in many areas, even those without FIOS. I just think in LA they need more time to get the various markets and mix-mash of cable systems upgraded to handle the speed.

Yep, that's what happened in San Diego and I think San Antonio, TX. I'm hoping we get the same treatment. But again, with TW lord only knows.

Lots of work being performed in so Cal it looks like on the status page. Let's hope that this leads to the aforementioned speed upgrades.

On that note, I had a tech tell me a week or two ago that the headend for my area (Costa Mesa) is in Orange. Why would they put it so far away? Why not somewhere a bit closer like Tustin or Newport Beach even?

It doesn't really matter where it is as cable unlike DSL does not degrade with distance. A consolidated had end is much more cost effective.

The average headend, without any special tricks or equipment, probably can serve RF signal out to about a 20 mile radius.

That can be extended with special tricks or equipment like EDFA optical gear or digital laser transmitter/receivers which really aren't that common in most cable headends I've seen for RF signal transmission. Once you start getting into all the various signal extension/regeneration techniques you can run the distance from the CMTS to the modem out to about 100 miles before timing issues exceed DOCSIS spec.

The distance between Costa Mesa and Orange is well within that 20 miles, but looking at the cities around Costa Mesa, I know there are a few other headends that are closer and MAY serve Costa Mesa the actual RF signals.

Orange also just happens to be where the RDC or regional data center for TWC is... just read any of Mele20's posts... which is where a bunch of the networking gear is.

Two weeks ago TWC replaced the Doo-Hickie in the street. It looks spiffy and high tech ,but the speeds are still the same and the service is still dodgy. So how long does it take to get the lickity split speed?

The equipment in the street and getting a speed upgrade are two different projects, one being done doesn't mean the other will happen.

Sure. Speed upgrades seem to happen on a headend-by-headend basis. So if a speed upgrade were dependent upon these hardware upgrades, minimally, we'd have to wait until the upgrades were complete all across town, or TW may decide to announce an upgrade for the whole LA area at a much later time.

All that said, I just think there must be some purpose to all of the recent work and upgrades being done. Re-deploying all of that equipment can't be cheap!

Yes there is a purpose... especially since the bandwidth ABOVE 860Mhz isn't currently usable by any CURRENTLY issued cable equipment. The new MPEG4 boxes and DOCSIS 3 modems can use it though...

Having all the various systems in SoCal using mostly the same gear and same architecture has definite cost savings and engineering benefits in the future. Gotta remember before Adelphia came into the area in 2000 the area was split up by over a dozen different providers, all with different designs and equipment. Adelphia fixed some of that but there was still alot to go.

I can get 10m/1m at all times of the day just about, with a few very rare exceptions (and I do mean rare). I hope the same holds true when they finally put the upgrade into effect here.
