| Brand New H.P. Laptop...Just left China
I put together a HP notebook online on the 4th. Email confirmation of my order said it would be built on or before the 12th and then no longer than 3 days to arrive at my door..
Yesterday I called H.P. to tell them to include the Vista Operating System Recovery DVD Disk which is a $19.00 option. I got a guy who I had trouble understand but basically he told me to late as computer is about out the door...I asked if it was shipped or not as I didn't receive any shipping confirmation email. He kept skirting the question and basically said yes to it has been shipped but couldn't give me any shipping details..I asked once again to just send the DVD recovery disk with the computer and he went on to say something like call back in a week or two..
I ended my call with him as I was not getting anywhere with him and I was also pressed for time. I figured I would just order it separately after the laptop arrives...This morning I check my email and still no email from HP telling me it was shipped. I then went to the only email I have received from them since ordering it on the 4th, which was the order confirmation email....In that email they told me they would send me a shipping confirmation email and also there was a link I could check the status.
So I checked that link and sure enough it said shipped yesterday...But then to my surprise it said shipped from Shanghai, CN. So I'm thinking the reason the guy I spoke to yesterday beat around the bush is he didn't want to tell me my new computer was coming from China and wasn't here in a HP plant where they could just enclose the OS recovery DVD.
My question...Are there any notebook computers built here in The United States any longer?
BTW, it is now approx 5:30PM EST on the 11th and still no shipping confirmation email from H.P. |

| reply to signmeuptoo said by signmeuptoo :You should see the hellish conditions the workers live under there: 24 hour workdays for an entire week! No pay for months! Time in a reeducation camp if a worker complaines... Wow, you know about China more than me. When was the last time you set foot in China or was that something you heard 20 years ago? I am not trying to raise controversy but I have got to say something. -- I used to be indecisive, now I am not sure. |

| reply to signmeuptoo said by signmeuptoo :I haven't been to China, yet, but I've read some about it and seen a couple documentaries, one on PBS another on some other network, I forget. I'm in China and I've been to several factories. The conditions are far from luxurious but it's nothing like what you describe above. "24 hour workdays" and "re-education camps"? Give me a break. There are definitely some Chinese factories that mistreat their employees but abuse is not the norm.
To respond to the original post by sailor : yes, HP might want to conceal the fact that the laptop is coming from China, since a lot of Americans are ignorant protectionists who get angry about international trade. |

1 edit | reply to sailor That's true, I personally do it through Acronis. The recovery partition on the hard disk is not a hidden one (you even see it in My Computer as a hard disk) and I just back up that partition through Acronis. Takes about 3-40 minutes.
I still wouldn't pay nearly $20 for that disk. Besides, that disk wont come with the drivers, It's just the operating system. If you have the recovery partition still intact through an HDD crash, it will get the drivers there, though.
EDIT: Ohh yeah, the first thing you should do is disable the recovery partition through the windows disk manager (removing the drive letter is enough), that way viruses can't get to it. |
