Brand New H.P. Laptop...Just left China

I put together a HP notebook online on the 4th. Email confirmation of my order said it would be built on or before the 12th and then no longer than 3 days to arrive at my door..

Yesterday I called H.P. to tell them to include the Vista Operating System Recovery DVD Disk which is a $19.00 option. I got a guy who I had trouble understand but basically he told me to late as computer is about out the door...I asked if it was shipped or not as I didn't receive any shipping confirmation email. He kept skirting the question and basically said yes to it has been shipped but couldn't give me any shipping details..I asked once again to just send the DVD recovery disk with the computer and he went on to say something like call back in a week or two..

I ended my call with him as I was not getting anywhere with him and I was also pressed for time. I figured I would just order it separately after the laptop arrives...This morning I check my email and still no email from HP telling me it was shipped. I then went to the only email I have received from them since ordering it on the 4th, which was the order confirmation email....In that email they told me they would send me a shipping confirmation email and also there was a link I could check the status.

So I checked that link and sure enough it said shipped yesterday...But then to my surprise it said shipped from Shanghai, CN. So I'm thinking the reason the guy I spoke to yesterday beat around the bush is he didn't want to tell me my new computer was coming from China and wasn't here in a HP plant where they could just enclose the OS recovery DVD.

My question...Are there any notebook computers built here in The United States any longer?

BTW, it is now approx 5:30PM EST on the 11th and still no shipping confirmation email from H.P.

If it makes you feel any better my Apple PowerBook G4 was built in China.. It fell on one of the corners about 6 months ago and is fine.

Oh, I don't mind that it was put together in China but I feel they didn't want me to know that. But then again, maybe I am mistaken. Also, I don't know why I assumed it was going to be built at HP here in the U.S.

Not to be all econ-nerdy - but almost every country as it develops economically moves from agriculture > industrial production > services

We (US) are at services. It's the same way as Japan, a lot of things use to be made there, but now they're outsourcing to China because Japanese wages have gotten too high/China is developed enough to do production.

China is a very large economy, but that's mostly due to the huge population, they're still quite poor, so they're a good place for manufacturing...

My Compaq laptop was also built and shipped from China directly to me. FEDEX brought it to my doorstep on Feb 25.

Unfortunately, if it was built in the U.S., you would be paying a good bit more for it.

Absolutely. Currency has little to do with it (not nothing...but little).

The issue is the cost of doing business. I am not either "for or against" this, just stating the facts. It is tremendously less expensive to manufacture goods in China than the U.S., first, and foremost, prevailing wages, but also, lower pollution standards. These factors alone outweigh shipping costs by a wide margin.

The days of building a product in close proximity to the intended market are long gone.

Again, I am not stating anything "political"...folks want high paying jobs here...conversely folks here also want inexpensive goods...I have no simple solution to make everybody happy...

That was true when oil was $30 a barrel, how about now when it is near $110 a barrel? Maybe going to $200 a barrel? At some point there has to be a diminishing return (when the shipping costs outweigh the production cost reductions).

No argument there! I am only speaking of the here and now. If it was cheaper to build 'em locally? Why then they would. In today's global economy, labor costs, and local business regulations (taxes, pollution standards, etc.) still hold more sway that cost of transportation...perhpas it will change down the road...but not today.

I'm in China and I've been to several factories. The conditions are far from luxurious but it's nothing like what you describe above. "24 hour workdays" and "re-education camps"? Give me a break. There are definitely some Chinese factories that mistreat their employees but abuse is not the norm.

To respond to the original post by sailor See Profile: yes, HP might want to conceal the fact that the laptop is coming from China, since a lot of Americans are ignorant protectionists who get angry about international trade.

Ignorant protectionists? I beg to differ. Products made overseas do not necessarily mean cheap. The Ford Fusion is made in Mexico yet it cost just as much as the made in Kentucky Camry or the made in Ohio Accord. Same thing goes with some overseas made jeans.

The thing I'm seeing that companies are not seeing is that when there are no jobs here, it means there are no money to be spent on their products. This means there is no money to be made.

I don't care where a product is made. However, I do expect the product to be cheaper, substantially cheaper, than if it were made HERE. I like the Ford Fusion but I will buy the Accord because it is made here and it cost the same as the made in Mexico Fusion

They make some Camry's in KY? I know some Toyota model are being made inside Subaru's IN plant.

"lot of Americans are ignorant protectionists who get angry about international trade."

Agreed. I have family members that look at every little thing they buy and go "Oh, it's made in China"/ (Ironically, they still buy it)

If people are that angry at us importing from another country, then they could just boycott. But what pisses me off is people who get angry at China building stuff then believes we should build everything and ship it to other countries. That's not protectionism, that's nationalism, and a dangerous kind.

And since I've said this somewhere else before and this was brought up, yeah, I'm a proud American.

that would be so costly it would not be funny.. the world could not operate like that trading.

I wonder how people will feel when China starts making more higher end items.. Who is going to be the "next China" that people will complain about where it's made.

They no longer say that about Japan but it used to be Japan.

Re: Brand New H.P. Laptop...Just left China

Ah, but Japan is a real friend now, so...

Anyways, glad your new system is making you happy, I share in your happiness for it! Enjoy!

I have just one comment: I am NOT a nationalist, NOT a protectionist, NOT an isolationist, or any other ist, far from it. What I AM for is freedom, civil rights, respect for sovereign nations (Taiwan), and so on... Just saying what I am for. Feeding hungry Chinese workers is a GOOD thing, and them having work is indeed a GOOD thing. But it needs to be inside fair trade with a nation that hasn't threatened us with war, which they have on numerous occasions.

They include the option to make a recovery disc, why can't they include the option to make a plain Windows install disc without any crap just as Microsoft ships it?

I'd rather (and do) download the ISO from available sources on the internet, than use a recovery disc.

My HP compaq business notebook was made in China but shipped from the US. Came with a Windows XP disc and a Driver & Application DVD. With that DVD it gives you granular control over what gets installed. you can just install the basic drivers or you can select all and get that nice fresh-from-the-factory bloat.

Why can't they do this for consumer machines? Seriously I understand all they care about is their bottom line but a buck. A fucking buck at most is what it would cost them.

When I bought my HP zx5000 series laptop a few years ago, it came with a full set of recovery discs. These included a normal XP Home install disc, driver's disc, applications disc, and add on software.

I loved it because if I wanted to redo my system, I could do so without all the bloatware.

That's true, I personally do it through Acronis. The recovery partition on the hard disk is not a hidden one (you even see it in My Computer as a hard disk) and I just back up that partition through Acronis. Takes about 3-40 minutes.

I still wouldn't pay nearly $20 for that disk. Besides, that disk wont come with the drivers, It's just the operating system. If you have the recovery partition still intact through an HDD crash, it will get the drivers there, though.

EDIT: Ohh yeah, the first thing you should do is disable the recovery partition through the windows disk manager (removing the drive letter is enough), that way viruses can't get to it.

Thanks.

Sure:

1. Log on as administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
2. Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
3. In the console tree, click Disk Management. The Disk Management window appears. Your disks and volumes appear in a graphical view and list view.
4. Select the "Recovery Partition" on Disk 0 and right click.
5. Click on the option "Change Drive Letter and Paths".
6. Click on "Remove" and press "Yes" on the promt.

The drive shouldn't show up on My Computer and you shouldn't be able to access it through Vista now. You also wont be able to make recovery disks or use the recovery option through HP's maintenance GUI. However, should you choose to restore via the partition, just press F12 during start up, it will access the recovery partition normally.

If you reinstall a new OS or recover, you'd have to hide it again since it will be detected during setup.

There was a report on trade with China on NPR a few months ago. The person being interviewed said that something like 96% of the worlds laptops are manufactured in 5 factories in one providence in China (I forgot exactly where he said they were).

I ordered a HP laptop a couple of years ago and they were very clear and open that it was being manufactured in China. I was very impressed at the time with the communication from emailing me when assembly started to finish and shipping with tracking number. And Yes, I got it from China faster than many businesses can ship who are in the US.

Interestingly I ordered some industrial network connectors from Germany last month. It took the US distributor two weeks to get ordering info and pricing. They said to expect 3-4 weeks for shipping. It is now over four weeks and I still don't have them. My laptop was built and delivered in two weeks. And people don't understand why China gets so much business!

I don't think they care if you know they ship from China or not, I just think the CSR probably in India since you said he had trouble understanding you, had no idea how to tell you that they couldn't put the disc in the box.

Only PC's built in North America by HP are the blackbirds and they are built in Canada.

Yeah, mine shipped from Nevada. However my guess that is the location of their storage warehouse not, some manufacturing facility. From what I have read, Dell laptops are made in Malaysia.

dell is definitely produced overseas and shipped top their warehouses here. thats how they can overnight practically any order for a reasonable price.

also Toyota's had a US production plant in lexington since 1988, which uncoincidentally is when their sales started going way up here.
to add to Toyota...Honda has a dozen production plants across US and Canada producing almost every aspect of their US-sold cars.

most mainstream cars sold here ARE mainstream b/c theyre made here for many reasons. only a few of the major car MFGs with strong footholds in the US dont have major assembly or production plants in North America. everyone from Mercedes to Subaru has plants here.

one of the bigger companies without a NA plant is VW, and reports show they're seriously considering investing in a US plant and projects it would increase their US sales from 330k in 2007 to 1 million by 2018.

My first laptop, that I still have and use even though it is quite a number of years old, is a Dell Inspiron 2650 and I can remember it had stamped on the box it came in...Product of Taiwan.

Except for one problem with upgraded ram I installed ( from Crucial ) it has performed flawlessly and still does today.

Well I still haven't received the HP Shipping confirmation email that they said they would send when I received the one and only email I received moments after I placed my order online. But this morning, Fed Ex was at my door with it. Fast shipping coming from China..Last night when I checked Fed Ex website for a delivery status update it said it had left Anchorage, Alaska.

The from return label on the upper part of the box says to me from:

HP Home and Home Office Store
5510 E Holmes Rd
Memphis, Tn

but then the larger label towards the bottom of the box says to me from:

Sunny Wang ( yep, sunny wang )
QUANTA/HP
Rong Xin Road
Shanghai Songjjang Export & Proc
Shanghai CN

And the serial # does start with CN

Again, I have no problem with it being built there and am looking forward to using it. I just wish HP would have sent me another email telling me that they shipped it and that the CSR would have been a bit more informed about things. But oh well, it came with free shipping and I used a coupon code that was good for $400.00 off so I am happy it is here..I just won't be able to turn it on and check it out until this evening or tomorrow..

The replies posted was an interesting read..Thanks!

And I had posted about the $400.00 Off coupon they had in the Hot Deals forum which is now expired but here is the site I found out about the $400.00 coupon code. They seem to always have deals and coupons codes for all brands.

And all the while there are less and less *good* jobs for people who cannot afford college, or just don't have the aptitude.

Folks that don't think people are getting hurt and ending up living on the street are in denial simply because they themselves have not been affected yet, but each person changes their tune when it hits THEMSELVES. That is exactly what happened to me, I used to be a firm believer in totally free trade and supply side economics, now I see it is pure bunk.

Most guys will deny it until THEY are hit themselves, that's the human nature of the male.

Re: Brand New H.P. Laptop...Just left China

There are a few things that are still Made in America that I have been stocking up on lately and their dimension's are 5.56MM x 45MM, 7.62MM x 51MM, and .30 Caliber (.30-06).

The devices that these things fit into are also Made in America.

The World is going to He*l in a hand basket and I thought it would be a good time to stock up on these American made items while I still can in case things change after the 2008 Elections that may prevent me from doing so in the future.

Woa! That's, well, gee, I don't know how to respond. But you and I must be on the opposite sides of the political spectrum I guess.

Hardcore right-wing Ronald Reagan Republican, but not a Neo-con. I hate Neo-cons because they have stole my party.

Don't worry about the other stuff though because I'm not greedy and will share if the SHTF. If you don't feel that you could shoulder one and do the deed then you can stand behind me and pass me fresh magazines.

Not only will I stand up for what I believe in, I will stand up for you too.

Edit:

They are just tools. They can't do anything all by themself.

Have you ever been in the middle of a project and needed a tool and you did not have it?

You have to make do with what you have or go and hunt up the tool that you need at the store and they might not have it when you need it. I would rather have a full set of tools and maybe have a few that I might not never need then to need a tool and not have it.

If you do make your own Recovery Discs then make sure not to use cheap DVDs and store them in a cool place out of the light and put them into a real jewel case.

Now that is good advise. I have had both sunlight AND water damage CDs in the past, I've been told it shouldn't happen, but it did...

Yes, one would would want to make sure that they were not stored in a damp place.

I have made compact discs that have turned milky over time and some have had the data layer flake off, but I don't think it can flake off on a DVD because of how they are made.

I gave up on cheap CDs a long time ago. I won't use any that don't cost at least $.75 each and they must be Made in Japan. Taiyo Yuden recordable DVD and CD media is all that I will use.

I turned the laptop on for the first time about an hour ago..I can't get over how quiet it is..And the screen is just gorgeous...Vista sure is different and will take some time to get use to but that I have...

They ( H.P.) sure do add a lot of stuff I see...A Yahoo toolbar and there is a eBay icon on my desktop and a program Aim 6..I never use instant messages but oh well, I will read about stuff and then all that added fluff will be gone.

But first..

As I'm typing this I am about to make my recovery disk. I started the first process which it says is "copying files" it is at the 60% at this very moment..I had a full spindle of unopened Maxwell DVD-R 4.7GB 16x 120 min so I opened it up and that is what I will be using in a few minutes..I hope they will be good enough..

I will for sure keep them in a cool place. Out of sunlight and in jewel cases..

Thanks for the sound advice!

Maxell CD-R Pro It doesn't get any better than this for CDs.

It seems that Microsoft moved a lot of things around just for the sake of moving them around.

You will really love the "User Account Control". It will ask you if you really meant to do something and you will think to yourself "No, I really didn't mean to click on that button, I must be stupid".

Start> Control Panel> Programs and Features will be your friend. You can just delete the Ebay icon.

Those Maxell DVDs will probably be just fine as long as you store them carefully. I'm not familiar with those Maxell DVDs though.

I use "Maxell CD-R Pro" 10 Pack CD-Recordable Discs (Maxells part #648410) and they are in my opinion they best recordable Compact Discs that can be bought in a retail store. These are Made in Japan by Tayio Yuden.

I rarely record anything on DVD and I use Light Scribe DVDs because I like to burn pretty pictures on them on the label side.

I don't think that anybody makes good Light Scribe discs.

Also make sure that you keep them in a place that is not damp and don't get your fingerprints on them because the oils can break down the discs.

You might want to look into making ISO images of your Recovery Discs when you are done burning them as you can save these ISO images to a portable hard drive or another computer in case you later have problems with your Recovery Discs. You can use these ISO images to burn new Recovery Discs at a later time.

Your Recovery Discs Creator program might give you the option to make ISO images. Some of these programs do give you this option and you can make the Recovery Discs first then also make the ISO images. You can only use the Recovery Discs Creator program to make the Recovery Discs one time.

I have Recovery Disc ISO images for hundreds of different computers backed up on my server for my customers and for new customers that may not have their Recovery Discs that have corrupted/damaged hard drives.

Enjoy your new computer. You got a nice one for a good price.

Vista is not really so bad and you will get used to it after awhile.

Your computer may already have Vista SP1 and it really does make things run better than before SP1 came out.

If you don't have SP1 yet you should be getting it before to long through Windows Updates.

I have it on all of my Vista computers now and it makes me feel a lot better about Windows Vista.

There will be some days that you will want to throw your laptop out of the window, but you will get through those days.
