My first laptop, that I still have and use even though it is quite a number of years old, is a Dell Inspiron 2650 and I can remember it had stamped on the box it came in...Product of Taiwan.
Except for one problem with upgraded ram I installed ( from Crucial ) it has performed flawlessly and still does today. |

| reply to Subaru Ah, but Japan is a real friend now, so...
Anyways, glad your new system is making you happy, I share in your happiness for it! Enjoy!
I have just one comment: I am NOT a nationalist, NOT a protectionist, NOT an isolationist, or any other ist, far from it. What I AM for is freedom, civil rights, respect for sovereign nations (Taiwan), and so on... Just saying what I am for. Feeding hungry Chinese workers is a GOOD thing, and them having work is indeed a GOOD thing. But it needs to be inside fair trade with a nation that hasn't threatened us with war, which they have on numerous occasions.

| reply to Kevin Dupuy that would be so costly it would not be funny.. the world could not operate like that trading.
I wonder how people will feel when China starts making more higher end items.. Who is going to be the "next China" that people will complain about where it's made.
They no longer say that about Japan but it used to be Japan. |

| reply to bokamba "lot of Americans are ignorant protectionists who get angry about international trade."
Agreed. I have family members that look at every little thing they buy and go "Oh, it's made in China"/ (Ironically, they still buy it)
If people are that angry at us importing from another country, then they could just boycott. But what pisses me off is people who get angry at China building stuff then believes we should build everything and ship it to other countries. That's not protectionism, that's nationalism, and a dangerous kind.
And since I've said this somewhere else before and this was brought up, yeah, I'm a proud American. -- Because there is no patch for human stupidity. Or my DIRECTV Plus DVR. |

Maxell CD-R Pro It doesn't get any better than this for CDs. |
said by sailor :Vista sure is different and will take some time to get use to but that I have... It seems that Microsoft moved a lot of things around just for the sake of moving them around.
You will really love the "User Account Control". It will ask you if you really meant to do something and you will think to yourself "No, I really didn't mean to click on that button, I must be stupid".
said by sailor :They ( H.P.) sure do add a lot of stuff I see...A Yahoo toolbar and there is a eBay icon on my desktop and a program Aim 6..I never use instant messages but oh well, I will read about stuff and then all that added fluff will be gone. Start> Control Panel> Programs and Features will be your friend. You can just delete the Ebay icon.
said by sailor :As I'm typing this I am about to make my recovery disk. I started the first process which it says is "copying files" it is at the 60% at this very moment..I had a full spindle of unopened Maxwell DVD-R 4.7GB 16x 120 min so I opened it up and that is what I will be using in a few minutes..I hope they will be good enough.. Those Maxell DVDs will probably be just fine as long as you store them carefully. I'm not familiar with those Maxell DVDs though.
I use "Maxell CD-R Pro" 10 Pack CD-Recordable Discs (Maxells part #648410) and they are in my opinion they best recordable Compact Discs that can be bought in a retail store. These are Made in Japan by Tayio Yuden.
I rarely record anything on DVD and I use Light Scribe DVDs because I like to burn pretty pictures on them on the label side.
I don't think that anybody makes good Light Scribe discs.
said by sailor :I will for sure keep them in a cool place. Out of sunlight and in jewel cases.. Also make sure that you keep them in a place that is not damp and don't get your fingerprints on them because the oils can break down the discs.
. . .
You might want to look into making ISO images of your Recovery Discs when you are done burning them as you can save these ISO images to a portable hard drive or another computer in case you later have problems with your Recovery Discs. You can use these ISO images to burn new Recovery Discs at a later time.
Your Recovery Discs Creator program might give you the option to make ISO images. Some of these programs do give you this option and you can make the Recovery Discs first then also make the ISO images. You can only use the Recovery Discs Creator program to make the Recovery Discs one time.
I have Recovery Disc ISO images for hundreds of different computers backed up on my server for my customers and for new customers that may not have their Recovery Discs that have corrupted/damaged hard drives.
. . .
Enjoy your new computer. You got a nice one for a good price.
Vista is not really so bad and you will get used to it after awhile.
Your computer may already have Vista SP1 and it really does make things run better than before SP1 came out.
If you don't have SP1 yet you should be getting it before to long through Windows Updates.
I have it on all of my Vista computers now and it makes me feel a lot better about Windows Vista.
There will be some days that you will want to throw your laptop out of the window, but you will get through those days. |

2 edits | reply to signmeuptoo Yes, one would would want to make sure that they were not stored in a damp place.
I have made compact discs that have turned milky over time and some have had the data layer flake off, but I don't think it can flake off on a DVD because of how they are made.
I gave up on cheap CDs a long time ago. I won't use any that don't cost at least $.75 each and they must be Made in Japan. Taiyo Yuden recordable DVD and CD media is all that I will use. |

1 edit | reply to signmeuptoo Hardcore right-wing Ronald Reagan Republican, but not a Neo-con. I hate Neo-cons because they have stole my party.
Don't worry about the other stuff though because I'm not greedy and will share if the SHTF. If you don't feel that you could shoulder one and do the deed then you can stand behind me and pass me fresh magazines.
Not only will I stand up for what I believe in, I will stand up for you too.
Edit:
They are just tools. They can't do anything all by themself.
Have you ever been in the middle of a project and needed a tool and you did not have it?
You have to make do with what you have or go and hunt up the tool that you need at the store and they might not have it when you need it. I would rather have a full set of tools and maybe have a few that I might not never need then to need a tool and not have it. |

| reply to signmeuptoo There are a few things that are still Made in America that I have been stocking up on lately and their dimension's are 5.56MM x 45MM, 7.62MM x 51MM, and .30 Caliber (.30-06).
The devices that these things fit into are also Made in America.
The World is going to He*l in a hand basket and I thought it would be a good time to stock up on these American made items while I still can in case things change after the 2008 Elections that may prevent me from doing so in the future. |

| reply to sailor And all the while there are less and less *good* jobs for people who cannot afford college, or just don't have the aptitude.
Folks that don't think people are getting hurt and ending up living on the street are in denial simply because they themselves have not been affected yet, but each person changes their tune when it hits THEMSELVES. That is exactly what happened to me, I used to be a firm believer in totally free trade and supply side economics, now I see it is pure bunk.
Most guys will deny it until THEY are hit themselves, that's the human nature of the male. -- You know your life has gotten "DICEY" when it turns into an episode of LOST, like my ex wife, who I swear is one of "The Others".
