| If u were downloading torrents, what security would u use?
I'm looking for opinions on what security programs you all would run if you were downloading torrents? Right now I have Comodo 2.4 for my firewall, Spybot's tea timer and Avast free for my AV (with standard and web shield active), is that enough protection? I also scan all downloaded files with A2 free version as well. Do you all recommend any additional security programs? Thanks for any helpful advice related to my inquiry. |

| I would definitly compare the md5 hashes of the files you download for starters.
also, torrents open ports in your firewall so it is a risk in itself. your taking a big risk of getting infected using torrents...you don't know where those files came from or who is hosting them.
I would think if your going to do this, I'd get Bitdefender free which is only a "on-demand" scanner...no real time, and maybe even scan the files with SuperAntispyware as well...there is only so much you can do when downloading from shady sources, even all of these measures will not guarantee the files in question are not infected with Trojans
Good luck
also, install ThreatFire from PCTools..its a HIPS it may be of help to you. »www.threatfire.com |

I'm looking for opinions on what security programs... The malware battle is pretty much over. They are winning hands down, and getting stronger every day. On my last overhaul I finally decided enough was enough and locked the C: partition with DeepFreeze. I use a second partition for my data. I've got "My Documents" living on the second partition now, and still working on how to get outlook express to live there also. Just shut the firewall all the way off and don't bother with anti-virus anything. With every reboot the OS is right back to the default config. If you want to check something for infection, use jotti, virus total or an online scanner. »www.faronics.com/html/deepfreeze···Standard |

| reply to Iliketorrents You might also want to look into Peer Guardian:

(still not available for Vista, though)
I would recommend downloading the torrents into a file separate from say, "My Music" or the like, to make it easier to do a separate scan on the downloads. You can always merge them with your primary file later. -- Life is simply one damned thing after another. |

The malware battle is pretty much over. They are winning hands down, and getting stronger every day. I would use a virtual machine, or a separate computer. On the cheap, you could use Sandboxie. »www.sandboxie.com/ |

| reply to Iliketorrents Given the wild west nature of P2P file sharing, I only download files which have MD5 hashes that match what I get from the verified genuine source sites that use BT to distribute their products.
P2P sharing is a great place to seed zero day exploits, rootkits and maliciously altered applications. I don't consider a tools based approach to be sufficient measure to prevent receiving malware. -- Mayors of New York come from nowhere and go nowhere. @ikbcc.com | reply to Iliketorrents Download only Scene material. No need for any extra protection then. There is never malware in Scene material. |
