| reply to MagMan Re: (Problem) Sending Mail... and the solution
Me too. I just noticed this yesterday. Here's the error message I get below. If I send the email repeatedly, it goes through sometimes, maybe 1 time in 5-10.
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Subject 'Mt Vernon phone numbers, 2008', Account: '-JRM-', Server: 'smtp.att.yahoo.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 465, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F
I don't need to use AT&T/Yahoo email, so will kill it, along with everything else related to their buggy, customer-unfriendly system. |

| reply to MagMan I've also been having the same troubles sending work e-mail from my home computer using apple mail. I get the standard error message:
From: address not verified; see »help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/o···-07.html
I have done the following:
1. Added work e-mail as a verified e-mail address on my sbc/yahoo e-mail account.
2. Set the outgoing mail preferences to SMTP Server: smpt.att.yahoo.com (I've tried lots of variations here) Port: 465 Use SSL Password authentication User Name ***@sbcglobal.net Password *****
3. Wrote to tech support. They suggested something about opting me out of a port 25 filter to let me send e-mail to non-att/yahoo servers. I can't figure out if this could be any help or not. The work e-mail runs off an exchange server, and demands I route messages through somebody else's outgoing mail server (usually the ISP's). Any ideas?
I am now able to send mail about 1 time in 10. Sometimes I'll be able to send a whole bunch of e-mails in a row without trouble, but then I'll go for hours without being able to send anything.
Thanks! |

| reply to lev Am I hosed? I am still using Ameritech.net. Today I tried to get into customer support on the new ATT pages but no place will accept my user name and password.
It seems AT&T knows nothing about me and has totally locked me out of email. Email still comes through but I can't figure out how to get the authentication server to recognize me.
I am using Thunderbird and have 3 accounts.
Any help? Can you point me to a place where I can get set up to send out email messages?
Thanks so much |

| Did you ever migrate from Ameritech Speedpath (or whatever they used to call it - I don't remember) to AT&T Yahoo? Or SBC Yahoo before it was AT&T?
If you didn't, that's why they don't know you although I thought they had migrated everyone by now. If that isn't it, better call em up or post in AT&T Direct here. -- Illegitimati non carborundum

1 edit | No, I never migrated. Is it too late to do so? I checked the FAQs on how to do it and went to the SBC Yahoo web site. At this web site nothing is mentioned about migration, it only mentions Upgrade.
Is this web site still viable and will it help me migrate?
Obviously I am behind the curve so now need some help.
thanks...... |

| rlpil06 , are you able to access your email on this webmail site: »https://webauth.att.net ? |

join:2006-03-21 Loves Park, IL | Yes, I can receive web mail. Interesting . . .
It does pale in comparison to the extensive folders of saved emails on my hard drive.
But, is this good news? Does it indicate I can get my previous email service back? |

| It means your UID/PW are still recognized. Whatever problems you are having are due to misconfiguration and not due to an authentication of your ID problem.
Because AT&T has gone to the trouble of setting up that webmail site for legacy users, it would seem that they have no requirement for legacy users to migrate to AT&T-Yahoo. |

| Instead of "misconfiguration" I think we need to look at how to "re-configure" my email client to match the changes made in AT&T email servers -- or something like that. I'm not a real geek on this stuff.
Where can I find info on how to re-configure my Thunderbird? I have read most of the messages on this thread but nothing seems to match what I see.
Any suggestions on how to reconfigure my Thunderbird? |

| Misconfiguration wasn't meant to suggest that you changed something. Sometimes the servers get changed without any notification so that email clients are no longer properly configured under the new setting requirements. They've done this over the years.
So what POP and SMTP servers are you currently using? |

| POP mail server is:
mailhost.chi.ameritech.net
Outgoing server (SMTP) is:
XXXXXXXX-mailhost.chi.ameritech.net(...
The "XXXXXXXX" above represents my email address, the part prior to the @sign.
I can't see what the rest of the above string is. The setting in this location seems to have been made automatically. It does have the choice of "default server" available. |

So, Thunderbird can receive but not send. |

| reply to rlpil06 I think they may have discontinued those servers. You might try switching to the generic legacy email servers:
pop.sbcglobal.net smtpauth.sbcglobal.net
They aren't on secure connections (SSL), but your user ID and password must be sent for the SMTP server.
If those don't work for you. maybe someone else here can suggest the newer legacy ameritech servers. I think there are some from thread reading in other regions, but I don't remember what they were. |

Gotta' run now so will try your suggestion in the next hour. |

| Aha! I see that Thunderbird has a special dialog box in which more than one outgoing (SMTP) server can be identified.
It allows for server name, port number, etc. Now, if I just knew the proper settings I could fill in the blanks and try some other SMTP servers. Obviously, without good info I could spend days guessing on port numbers. |

| Email messages continue to arrive OK, I just can't send from the Thunderbird email client. WEB mail messages can be sent and received OK.
The error message I get when trying to send states:
". . . message could not be send because connecting to SMTP server mailhost.chi.ameritech.net failed . . "
So far I have tried these SMTP servers:
smtp.ameritech.yahoo.com smtpauth.sbcglobal.net
These are SMTP server settings you sent and as I found in other messages. Nothing works so far. I just now posted a detailed message in DIRECT.
Any other suggestions while I wait for a response from DIRECT? I am sure there is a simple solution. Just got to get configured for the proper server.
Thanks........ |

| reply to robinth Re: (Problem) Sending Mail
said by robinth :BUT, if the "from" address is not in the ATT domain hierarchy (ameritech, sbcglobal, etc.) the message is sent normally. That's not entirely accurate in my case. I never use my SBC-issued email address in the FROM field.. it's always a disposable (spamgourmet address) or what I'll call a vanity email address (like myfirstname@mysurname.name). For the first couple weeks since the problem struck, my outbound mail would bounce the first couple times.. and after ~4-5 resends, the SMTP server would eventually accept it.
And in the past couple days, I'm seeing that I cannot even resend to get around it. So the results are not even consistent, which is the worst possible case.
It's way too inconvenient to login to a webpage and register a new email address for every one-time-use disposable email address I craft. I'm changing email providers, BTW.
I really need an SMTP provider I can trust. Suggestions? -- Re-elect Monica Lowinski's ex-lovers wife! |
