If you have authenticated and you are still getting 553 errors then you most likely did not authenticate at the right mail site - be aware that all of the Yahoo! and white label Yahoo offshoots LOOK exactly the same - the only difference is the URL. At least that was my solution. I started getting these messages almost three months ago. Since then I have been tearing my hair out because the solution that everyone else was using wasn't working for me. I even tried different email clients thinking it was because I was using Mac Eudora.

And no, it was that originally I saw the yahoo.com message explaining what to do...so I went to my YIM (Yahoo!) mail account, signed in with my yahoo email address and password and filled out all the other domains I needed. Problem solved right? No.

Today, I saw a reference to the fact that it's most likely your DSL server that needs to have the authentication. Doh. So, I typed in att.yahoo.com, signed in with my sbcglobal.net email address and going to the mail screen - up pops an entirely DIFFERENT ui that looks exactly the same as my Yahoo! Mail interface but it says - ATT Yahoo! on the banner. And no emails in that account. Authenticated and problem solved.

This was exactly the problem I was having. I have a Yahoo! account with the login id xxxxxx which is e-mail address xxxxxx@yahoo.com, and I could login to that and do all the verification to no avail. My AT&T DSL account has the user name and e-mail address xxxxxx@sbcglobal.net, and when I logged into att.yahoo.com with that one, the verification worked.

Oy.

I've read through this thread and all of the solutions offered, but I haven't come across my precise situation, so I'm checking to see if anyone has suggestions to offer.

I'm a legacy DSL client who was with SNET, which was then bought by SBC, and I never switched over to SCB Yahoo! DSL (or the current AT&T YAhoo! DSL). I don't actually use my ****@snet.net email address for anything, but I'd been sending outgoing email for my long-term email account on a third-party server via smtp.snet.net. Until last night, that is, when it suddenly stopped working.

Since I'm legacy, I'm not on AT&T Yahoo! DSL, and therefore Yahoo! doesn't recognize my ****@snet address as a valid one, meaning I can't log in and verify an address. Am I therefore just pretty much screwed as far as sending outgoing mail via any of AT&T's current smtp servers? My login/password still works at the AT&T webmail site.

You should be able to use smtpauth.sbcglobal.net. You will have to setup smtp authentication in your client. I don't think SSL is supported, but port 25 and port 587 should both work.

Thanks for the quick response. I got the same results using smtpauth.sbcglobal.net that I had previously, whether I used port 25 or port 587, and whether I attempted the send using my ******@snet.net address or a third-party address.

And, for the record, I'm using Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 and I set the authentication to "secure connection: Use TLS, if available."

Have you tried smtpauth.sbcglobal.net, port 25, "secure connection: No", and your email address with domain, e.g. ****@snet.net for user name portion of the user name/password?

I have now, and it worked, both for sending from my *****@snet.net address and for sending using a third-party from: address. Thanks for your help!

Fixed it

@sbcglobal.net

I wanted to offer another maybe-solution for the people having trouble sending mail. I'm using Mail in OSX and for the past few months have to hit send over and over about ten times before an email will go out, and I think I found the solution this morning. I have AT&T DSL with an sbcglobal.net account, so I made my outgoing server this: plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com -- and now it works. I hope it works for you, too.

Thanks Fixed It. I've tried 14 or 15 other solutions that didn't work for me. Changing to plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com did -- at least temporarily

That's interesting. How or where did you come across it?

More to the point, do you have any information on what exactly triggered that problem? I've seen it, but I can't for the life of me figure out the cause. It's more the exception than the rule that a Mac will be affected by this.

Re: (Problem) Sending Mail... and the solution

Problem Sending mail with att yahoo again, tried all the solutions i found in this tread, no help, besides calling support yet, anyways the error message is this

Task 'pop.att.yahoo.com - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC7D) : 'Your outgoing (SMTP) server does not support SSL-secured connections. If SSL-secured connections have worked in the past, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

I don't get it, only changes in the PC are.

Windows Vista Home Premium-32bit
Outlook 2003 Service Pack 3 32bit
Windows Live Onecare

used to work fine, i don't know what the heck to do at all now, if it's a WIndows Live Onecare issue, att/yahoo issue, or Outlook 2003, or Windows Vista--Any help appreciated

I just tested this using Thunderbird. My first attempt failed with an error (could not connect to server). The second attempt was successful.

Most issues like this is best resolved by using smtpauth.sbcglobal.net as your SMTP server. Then using your att acct (att.net, sbcglobal.net,snet.net, etc..) for the smtp aunthentication. Port number should be 25. SSL is disabled. Close and restart you client. Try to send out a test email.

If your using a 3rd party email and wish to use that email's smtp server also, you can. Call AT&T and request to have port 25 opened. After they have confirmed that port 25 is opened you should turn off your dsl modem for no less than 2mins. Turn it back on afterwards and you should be able to send out email using the 3rd party smtp server. If you still cannot send, you should try the smtpauth settings.

Btw, dont forget to check on your firewall settings.

This restored my ability to send mail:

mail.sbcglobal.net
port 25
NO authentication or SSL

Thank you "sf user" for this post...

I just wasted 3 hours trying every suggestion in this thread and calling ATT tech support.
No joy until I stumbled on the above post.

Error 553 = 0x800ccc78 digital Id when sending Email.
After spending time with my internet access company they directed me to Microsoft support 1-866-727-2338 where they enter my computer by remote. They tried to fix it but couldn't if they could have it would have costed $59.00 They said they no longer support microsoft express with digital Ids and that i would have to
purchase OUTLOOK 2007 or upgrade to vista. Truth or a lie this is what i was told from the lady in india. I tried reseting up through my provider earlier but with no luck. Its about money boys and girls.u gotta go with the flow eventually. Sure hate it!

I've read through this thread & its not really helping me much.
I've been an old SBC DSL customer for quite a few years. Over the last month or so I've had an email issue starting to creep up & is becoming a pain. Today has been the worse so far. Here's what I get when trying to send an email:

Sending of message failed.

The message could not be sent because connecting to SMPT server SMPT.ATT.YAHOO failed.....yada....yada.....yada....
(yada's added by me)

I use Thunderbird and have for years. Settings:

pop.att.yahoo.com port 995 security SSL

Outgoing...smtp.att.yahoo.com Port 465

Any ideas? Maybe someone should fix their server?

Thanks
