 1 edit | MagicJack's claim of free trial numbers is bogusSomeone on another forum pointed this out »unofficialmagicjack.forum2u.org/···ml?#6151
It is estimating based on the time of day and an arbitrary visitor number they estimate. I am sure this is not even close to correct but I bet it helps sell.
<script language="javascript">
//-----------------------------------------
// need to set this value dynamically
var perday = 29674;
//-----------------------------------------
// the interval (ms) between new visitors
var interval = Math.round(86400000/perday);
// how far into today are we?
var now = new Date();
var stoday = (3600*now.getHours() + 60*now.getMinutes() + now.getSeconds()) % 86400;
// count so far today
var count = Math.round( (1000*stoday) / interval);
updateCounter();
var timer = window.setInterval("updateCounter()", interval);
function updateCounter() {
count = (count + 1) % perday;
var str = count.toString();
var len = str.length;
var row = document.getElementById("pageCounter");
for( i=0; i<len; i++) {
row.cells[i+5-len].innerHTML = str.charAt(i);
}
}
function stopPageCounter() {
window.clearInterval(timer);
}
</script>

MJ is really turning out to have some sort of a corporate deceptive psychosis about them. They have no phone number, no street address, no email address, no fax number, no uninstall option on their software ... and today we find they are fudging their numbers and offering inconsistent reasons about the cause of a service outage.
Why do they hide and lie when the truth would do?
If the subject was your next door neighbor, you would suggest mental health therapy. Would you give your crazy neighbor your credit card info?
All of you MJ customers need to realize: they have your credit card info. It might be a good time to change your credit card number.
And one of you hackers might figure out and post the explicit instructions on removing the MJ software from PCs. |

It really looks like they want to make a quick exit if the company goes bust. I don't mean they will do anything illegal, but just get out with the least amount of irritation from irate customers who have lost their money. |

| reply to laserjobs Very nice thread and find by that poster. Personally I think that is a fairly BS claim for them to make. Right now it says 22,811 new people.
It's almost as annoying as the video that plays when you navigate to the site. |

 | reply to laserjobs Hard to believe this thread was started by laser....... He's always been quite the fan of MJ. |

 nitzanPremium,VIP join:2008-02-27 kudos:2 | reply to laserjobs heh. My first thought looking at that counter was.. ooh, they placed this here to convince people "everyone is buying" so they should too. Had no doubt it was fake.
Kinda wonder about all the "news reports" and b/s they place on there too. Wonder how many are actually real.
Sounds to me like they'll be up for some months, get as much cash as they can, pay their managers/owners insane salaries, and then disappear or file for bankruptcy. There is no way they can keep giving service at $20/year consistently, and the advertising module will not work.
So when you buy a MagicJack, keep in mind that it might not survive the year or two you're paying for. |

I've had mine for three (3) months. It more than paid for itself the FIRST month! If it goes under, I had a good ride while it lasted. If you're looking at this any other way, shame on you!
Donn -- These opinions are strictly my own. However, if you really want them, we can negotiate. |

How about the business of VOIP? If MJ crashes, and all these devices become worthless, and their CLEC closes down and phone numbers can't be ported out and folks lose their phone numbers ... then we will have more bad publicity in the press worse than SunRocket which closed, and Vonage which is tight-roping around bankruptcy. And all those press reporters all around the country who are now promoting the device on MJ's website will be on the attack against VOIP technologies because they got burned. Growing carriers like VT will stop growing because people won't want to be involved with the third strike. Our new friend nitzan will find his investment down the crapper because there will be no new customers. And the ready to launch Houston VOIP Mafia will find their two years of meticulous planning and tweaking absolutely maddening when nobody trusts them due to the MJ disaster. The ultimate crash of MJ will have repercussions far beyond your trash can. It's much bigger than you, Donn. |

 ptrowskiGot Helix?Premium join:2005-03-14 Putnam, CT kudos:4 | reply to laserjobs The part that worries me about MJ is the fact they are their own CLEC. Should they go the way of SR, you don't have that "parachute" should you need to keep your number. |

That is why I am using Grand Central instead of being held hostage by any VOIP provider. That is assuming grand Central is good on their word of a phone number for life. |

 | reply to laserjobs What is wrong with you people? MagicJack is simply showing the number of visitors to the web site, it is a counter!
Furthermore, magicJack does not install software, it creates a folder in the application directory which is easily removed.
Any residual registry entries are meaningless and completely innocuous. You do of course realize that removing a program via the Control panel, in many cases, leaves behind registry entries. They are totally harmless.
If you are paranoid, simply use a registry cleaner however either way the small registry residue will not affect your computer's operation.
Furthermore, magicJack does not contain sypware nor does in contain adware. They may insert ads in the left panel of the soft phone at a future date.
As far as other VoIP growing, I highly doubt that that statement is true. Most traditional VoIP operators will be out of business by the end of 2008. |
|
 | reply to laserjobs I had mine for months. $40.00 for the months of service, AND if they go under, my MJ box can be used as an audio device for Earthcaller (although you would have to use their outgoing number box). If MJ goes under, I may be disappointed, but not devastated. For the time being, I will use the service as if it is going to continue. If it happens to fail someday, I will put a few bucks into another provider. At least no-one is paying $199.99 up front, only to lose that much money. I saved communication money via MJ, and will continue to save. |
