FIOS ? Who can get that ?

How many markets have FIOS available ? I don't know why people think it's going to be the demise of other broadband providers ... It's only available in such limited markets it's NOT a factor (yet). It's also only available in Verizon markets and they by no means are "everywhere". Maybe a more generic term should be used. In 80% of Ohio, for example, we'll never see Verizon's FIOS.

Are you joking me? It's a MAJOR factor... FIOS is already available to millions of people and it will be available to many more in the coming years. Of course it's a major problem... Do you know how many subscribers the cable companies are losing to FIOS? It seems every week another one of my neighbors is getting FIOS installed...

80% of Ohio might not get FIOS (because it isn't in Verizon's territory????), but that doesn't mean Verizon doesn't have a LARGE territory in most of the states. In NJ, Verizon has the majority of state under their control.

Actualy, what might be more pertinent to look at is what areas that TWC serves that have competition from Verizon and then inside those areas, which ones have FiOS available.

Hall made a good statement here. TWC pretty much has a stranglehold in all of Ohio and the only places I know of that Verizon serves are those in and around Cleveland. Everywhere else is served either by AT&T or Embarq in the telco market.

Now I don't know about other locations around the US, but I'd assume it would be a very similar situation.

Re: FIOS ? Who can get that ?

VZ services Marion County, BG, Clyde, Bellevue, and areas around there but AT&T is the main provider.

Verizon provides service to a lot of customers... Time Warner is also a big provider in this part of the country, so I'd conclude that they're taking a lot of customers away from them. Here in New Jersey, they service pretty much 90%+ of the state...

I'd bet TWC is taking more phone customers from Verizon than Verizon is taking TV/broadband from TWC...

That could certainly be true... But then again cable VOIP has been around a lot longer... I know a lot more people who have dropped their landline for VOIP who just wound up going back to the telco for internet/phone/TV since they're saving $60-70/month here for 2 years, plus the service quality is much better.

Quite honestly, you'd have to be nuts not to go with FIOS if it is available to you.

Then I'm nuts because it's available to me but I prefer the local cable service. It's cheaper for me and has a better DVR.

Well if it is somehow cheaper and has better service, then I don't see why you'd change. But for the majority of people, FIOS is an excellent deal. They beat the local cable company by $60/month (with a 2 year contract) + more services and 1000X better service quality. We'll see after the 2 years are up what the prices are, but apparently they're still a little cheaper as of TODAY.

Re: FIOS ? Who can get that ?

Thats the thing. Who wants to be tied into a two year contract for their internet, phone and cabletv? i sure don't. If i want to change for any reason i want the option to especially if its due to service issues.

You don't need to be "tied" into a contract... You can signup at current rates, which are still better than the cable company... I (and many others) had horrible service from Cablevision... Pixelation, horrible signals, etc... Multiple tech calls could never resolve the problems... I have not had ONE problem with FIOS yet... No pixelation on the TV, crystal clear and the internet (from what I can tell) has never gone down once.. For me, the contract is a major bonus.. I don't switch services every year, since there would be no reason too... The only options are FIOS and Cablevision... FIOS saves me $60/month and offers much much more, so it is clear that FIOS is the better choice.

You can switch back, but you forfeit $149.... I don't ever see a reason why I'd need to switch back. FIOS is simply amazing compared to cable.

Re: FIOS ? Who can get that ?

As you said, you have not have any problems yet. I have had Optimum Online, TV, and Phone for just about three years and I have not had any problems. My download is consistently around 11 megs and my upload is usually around 1 meg (and no, I do not subscribe to Boost). My parents on the other hand supposedly had numerous problems with the Optimum Online services. They had both TV and Internet, and the pixelation and loss of Internet was horrible. Every user's experience is vastly different - as can be noticed by most of the reviews on these forums. The switched to DSL and DirecTV a while back, and thus far they were be happy.

Honestly though, if you compare the rates between Optimum and FIOS in NJ the services are about the same. Where as FIOS has some channels that Optimum subscribers would want, FIOS charges more for a HD DVR box, HD subscription, etc. So in my opinion, the only thing that Verizon has really done for this state anyway is.... provided another way to bundle all your services. They have not caused either Comcast or Optimum to lower prices in an effort not to lose customers. Only time will tell who the real winner is between these two.

Even if it was available to me I don;t know I would want to get possibly caught up in the Verizon billing hell they seem to be having with FIOS. Thank god we have not had issues with our cell bill but I would not consider it till I thought they had it straightened out... I don't do TWC and it would take a gun to my head and my children threatened with their life before I would go back to them in ANY capacity.

But then I would also NOT get the tripe play - last thing I want is all services running thru one connection so that if it goes out so do ALL of the services.

Of course I an in Ohio and AT&T land so I have no worried about FIOS ever getting here....

Well #1, I have had a complete nightmare experience with Cablevision, so I'd never go back to them... Making the move to Verizon was as smooth as butter. Everything worked out perfectly... Including the install, service quality and free LCD HDTV I got.

I really don't see the big deal with having three services over one line... The only "vital" utilities are gas, electric, water and phone service.. I don't see how it would not having 1 out of 3 would be any better than having none of them... Usually they fix the problems pretty quick also, and fiber optics eliminated many of the signal problems. The only way you can really lose service now is if the ONT fails, there is windstorm or something happens in the CO.

Re: FIOS ? Who can get that ?

Or the line gets cut and now you are out phone along with everything else and with 2 young kids - ain't going to do it. Phone lines have not gone dead in years upon years with POTs - even with hours long power failures. Not going to let an internet outage of any kind affect my dialing 911 from a regular phone where the chance of 911 not working is incredibly small in my area.

Phones have never gone dead here either.. I don't think you really understand how FIOS works though... It isn't a VOIP phone service like you get from the cable company... It is basically regular phone service + cable tv + internet over fiber... You can still purchase VOIP over FIOS, but that is a totally different service as it rides over the internet... Your internet service can go down and FIOS phone might not go down. There is also a battery backup on the phone which is supposed to last for 8 hours of talk time, which isn't bad at all.

It still does not matter being in AT&T land - if I was in Verizon maybe but I am not. And you are probably right - I am thinking more of VIOP than FIOS...

Not all that many, according to »Verizon Aims For 6-7 Million FiOS Users By 2010

As of December, Verizon had passed 9.3 million homes and over the course of that rollout procured only 1.5 million subscribers, with only about 2/3rds of that group signed up for FiOS TV services.

Sure, Verizon is converting some subscribers, but with a lackluster 16% adoption rate I think Verizon shareholders have more of a reason to be concerned than other broadband competitors.

Verizon will bring FIOS where they can make the most money off of every foot of fiber buried. Period.

That means Metro Areas where they presently are deployed and where there are more than X hundred thousand households and first where there is little or no competition, to be followed by where there some competition and lastly where there is fierce competition. (obviously the size of the Metro Area has an impact upon the aversion to competition eg. NYC)

Finally, like with wireless, Verizon has a quality product in FIOS, and it is certainly priced bundled likewise.
