| Need help with new build: Gaming Rig on 1000.00 Budget
Hey guys, Once again I pull on the resources of my friends at DSLR. Last Rig I built was a P4 2.8E so as you can tell I'm a little out of date by today's standards. I'm still running with the ATI 9800 (Great Card BTW). Anyway It's time for a new build and I'm trying to build the best gaming rig I can for 1k. I used to be an AMD guy then switched over to Intel and really never looked back but I'm open to all suggestions. Looking for some good ideas for a complete build so if anyone has opinions I would love to hear them. If you're like me it's easier to spend someone else's money than my own so let's look at it that way Thanks, Bob |

| reply to bfoster2000 You didn't state very clearly what types of games or other uses you might subject your system to and information like that can help people with guiding their recommendations. I'm guessing that your intent is that it will be a system that be able to play any game really well and won't need to be upgraded until your next build. Here is a possible build that I think might work for you.
Only part of this that I can currently testify to is the case. It's a very nice case that is well laid out setup that has lots of room for future expansion and cooling.
I have the motherboard, ram, and dvd drive on order for my own system. I basically went with the buy a good non-sli/crossfire board and spend a little more on the video card. Yes you might not need nor use the full 4 GB of ram but depending on your OS/application needs it leaves you plenty of room. Others might have some better ideas and perspective on a good build. Best of luck on it!

| reply to bfoster2000 i like everything listed above besides the GFX card. the GTS 320 and 640 are pretty out-dated for the price. an 8800GT or 9600GT perform better than both the 320 and 640 GTS' and cost less. 9600GT: »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···14130334 8800GT 512MB: »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···14127329 $220 - $30MIR = 190. cheapest name brand 8800GT 512MB card AND it's the overclocked edition to boot.
according to HardOCP the OC edition BFG 9600GT is the practically the same speed as the 8800GT 512MB. after rebate i think the OC'ed 8800GT would be a better deal, but before rebate i'd probably go with the 9600GT.
both are considerably faster than the $190 GTS 320MB AND $250 640MB cards which are old models and being phased out.
also, you could opt for a NEW 8800GTS *512MB* card (nvidia doesnt like to make it easy...) for $250 - $30MIR = $200 plus free The Witcher RPG game (awesome deal considering the rebate and awesome game worth $50). this card is faster tha the 8800GT, but only marginally. It's faster than the 8800GT than the 8800GT is faster than the 9600GT, if that makes sense lol.
also considering some room left on the budget i'd recommend a Q6600 if possible »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···19115017
the E6750 is a great chip at a great price, but the step up to quad-core is worth every penny IMO. i have a dual and quad and the quad is just amazing. and yes, more and more programs are being multi-threaded to take advantage of 2 and 4 cores. many new PC games will have 2+ core support out of the box and it definitely makes a difference.
everything else posted above is spot-on with what i'd recommend. the case is obviously variable depending on your tastes, but Cooler Master makes great cases so i have no problem with that. -- Somnambulator - t3h 5133pw41k3r

| reply to bfoster2000 Your right, I should have mentioned that I like FPS type games. My son bought me The new Unreal Tournament and I want to be able to play some of the higher end games ( The new Far Cry) as well. It's is amazing how much difference there is just in Power supply requirements these days. 350W used to be excellent while 450 was a little over the top. Now of witch cost more that 50.00 at the time. Now you can spend 3X that to get a PS that is at the low end of your needs. When it comes to processors I would lean more toward the Quad over the Core 2. I bought a Dell Lappy with Core 2 2.0 and I thing it is a Dog compared to my 2.8E? (Same OS). Anyway There is alot of good info here. I was surprised to see that not much mention of AMD or ATI. Are they not as popular these days? I'll check in later. Thanks Guys, Bob |

AMD would still be it for "budget" PCs, like ~$500 for full comp, but for performance, there's nothing available to a consumer that's more powerful. (Apple switched over to Core 2's early last year or the year before.) |

Verrrry slight OC of 2.2GHz CPU to 2.65. If no OC, just get the E6750 mentioned above.
That whole thing, including G11 keyboard and all-in-one printer, OS, monitor, etc was $1200. Subtract another $40-$50 in MIRs also. You only need 2GB RAM for XP, but allocate 4GB for Vista.
Its a slick gaming rig, plays all current games wonderfully, including Crysis. It'll crunch data fast, video editing, etc. L2 cache is the CPU's biggest shortcoming, but real world...meh...nominal performance hit. Like I said, if in doubt just get the E6750. |

That "dog" probably has more to do with it being a Dell laptop than being a Core 2 duo. God forbid if you have Norton on there or something. My E6300 (stock 1.8GHz OCed to 2.8) is verrry fast. As for going quad, sure, you can do that too - you know your budget and what you need.
You seem to have a lot of preconceived notions about AMD and ATI, probably legitimate from 4,5,6 years ago. Times have changed, and they'll likely change again.
