Re: Higher cost of car battery and theft of catalytic converters

Are you just getting phone quotes?

Most repair shops do not like phone price shoppers and will quote on the high side.

At least that is what I read in the Dealer's forums at www.iatn.net

edit- I needed a muffler and tailpipe for my old pickup - all the phone quotes came up with about the same price. In person they varied by 100 bucks.

I also change my own batteries and normal wear items in my '60 Ranchero. Do you keep your battery on a tender? I find a tender extends the life of my batteries on my Ranchero and my 2 motorcycles. Because my Ranchero is not a daily driver and M/C batteries are so small they need extra "lovin'".

Another option to look into is that you can buy a Delco battery top. You can install a battery of you choice and you install this top and when you show under the hood it looks like a stock Delco battery. If you buy from a good antique car supplier it will be a nice looking one. I know guys that do this instead of using a tender and have them at shows.
No, I don't keep it on a tender. While it is not a daily driver I do take her out a couple times a week. And while I might take up my friends offer to hit some car shows with them this season, I am more into driving it and running her than interested in making it or turning it into a show car. One of my friends has a 37 Chevy truck that is all for show..Trailers it all over and I might go with him with my Firebird more to support him than anything else..The Firebird is mint and only has 35k and I purchased it off the original owner who ordered it back in 2002. Very fast, very loud but I don't beat it..Neither did the original owner..I mean out on back country roads I will run her as you don't buy a high performance muscle car to just drive to church on Sundays. but there is a big difference between letting her out and beating on her...I'm sure you know what I mean.

I put the new battery in and did take her out yesterday as I had to go out of town to a dentist appointment so I took these pics even though she is dirty from sitting out for a few days without the cover.

Dealer Cost is under $50.00
Add shipping and you are up to $70 per unit the Arabs need to get their cut of the action too.

Count me in as lost... What do Arabs have to do with batteries?

Batteries are made of lead think heavy. They are moved on large trucks and freight trains that burn fuel that is getting more expensive by the day in fact with items like batteries the transportation costs can match or exceed the manafacturing costs. Just ask the battery importers who where bringing them in from China by the container load a few years ago and who are now moving to domestic suppliers as even with higher manafacturing costs here the overall price is lower than dealing with China as transport costs are so uch lower.

As for the Arabs think oil.

And that is how the Arabs have a slice of the battery distribution process by proxy.

I know that sound.

Sounds really good, here's my old Z on the day I sold her. You can see my other project rusting away in the garage as well.

Clean ride. Do you wish now that you would have kept her?

Not really.

I owned it for 8 years and put thousands of dollars into it, I started getting tired of it and had to cut my losses.

I would have kept it but my wife said I couldn't have 5 cars at the house.

Yeah, I can understand after 8 years and $$$ one can get tired of it. I say now I will never sell my Firebird but who knows down the road...

Today I went to my local Chevy new car dealer to buy a new battery.
The battery I bought is a A/C Delco 75-6YR and it cost $135.95 plus $11.73 tax for a total of $147.68. I believe Mentat See Profile works for GM parts so maybe he can chime in about rising prices.

Next time don't go to a car dealer. If you went to Sears, Walmart, even Target you could get a battery for $60.

He wants to keep his mint car looking mint.
