Humble or Umble?

I am relatively new to this area and am confused by the pronunciation of the city of Humble. Every time I watch the local ABC 13 news the weather guy and others pronounce the city of Humble as Umble.

It drives me nuts...what say you? Humble is the way I would pronounce it.

Must be a Texas thing. I can think of no reason for the H to be silent other than it being a Spanish word, which I am pretty sure it is not.

I am originally from California and spent some time in Arkansas, but never heard anything like this.

Just one of them things I guess its silly but its been like that for awhile. We do pronounce "H" well considering "Howdy" So I don't think its a lack of.

We have quite a few streets and places around the area that are pronounced differently then they are spelled. Another example besides Humble is Antoine road is pronounced An-twan.

Yes, An-Twan would be the normal way to pronounce Antoine...the French pronunciation. Umble is just weird.

Well, if you go to New York, there's a street in Manhattan named Houston. Up there, they say "Hows-ton".

"The proper pronunciation of the city is "umble" (the "H" being silent), as the city's founder (see below) pronounced his last name in that manner."

I'm new here also (6 months) and I think the street that confused me the most at first was Kuykendall (Pronounced Kirkendall)

Being fron Queens ( NYC)I have to agree with this and for all them years I thought I was saying it right till i moved to Houston 12 years ago. I am not sure if we have a Houston St here in denver.

really you can call it whtever you want, either way. there is the local way you say it, but houstonians won't be quick to correct you unless they are snobbish.

" _appy _irthday"

(That would really screw up the "W_eel of Fortune" tv show) **

There's where the "H" has gone!
