2 edits | technical reference for actiontec GT724-WG? Does anyone have a manual / detailed technical reference for the Actiontec GT724-WG? For some reason there does not appear to be a tech section on this dsl modem/gateway on the actiontec site.
Specifically, I'm wondering about the possibility of running my own firewall/gateway behind the actiontec (either a smoothwall or a pfsense gateway/firewall.)
How do I get the public IP to the smoothwall/pfsense box? If under the Security Tab I turn off NAT, what exactly happens? (does the modem still grab the dhcp IP, so I'd need static IPs to assign a public IP to the smoothwall box behind it?) Under Advanced Setup, WAN IP, can I, or do I need to, change dhcp to "RFC 1483 Transparent Bridging" to allow the smoothwall/pfsense box to grab the public IP itself via DHCP? Is there another way to setup a gateway/firewall behind the actiontec to feed my LAN without double NAT? -- Wildblue in Lake Michigan | Color Printing Forum Unhappy with noticeably slower secure sites, higher latency due to 11/17/06 firmware changes |

 | Got the manual from actiontec support which gives a nice overview of the router (though you can get pretty similar by going through the router's GUI section by section too.) It doesn't go into any detail on "RFC 1483 Transparent Bridging" vs. DHCP as the way to pass the public IP over to a separate firewall/gateway/router box, but I believe that sounds like the only option to do so, so I'll give it a try. -- Very happy TDS DSL user | Wildblue in Lake Michigan |

 | Here's how I passed the dhcp-assigned public IP to my separate firewall box: 1.) set actiontec modem to different lan IP under advanced, lan setup 2.) set actiontec modem to transparent bridged mode under wan setup
No problems. Can still access actiontec modem GUI from lan and firewall box behind it picks up public ip via dhcp. Nice! -- Very happy TDS DSL user | Wildblue in Lake Michigan |

 | reply to Island Jeff P.S. I guess I should add that it's so simple and works just as you'd expect that would explain why they didn't include a manual
Maybe I'm getting old as I just expected there to be a glitch or difficult way required to accomplish a simple task! -- Very happy TDS DSL user | Wildblue in Lake Michigan |
