To get 5.1 surround sound, you need to have a home theater receivers and a 5.1 speaker package. Your tv has only the left and right audio channels(stereo) and the surround sound that the tv says it has is simulated. |

| reply to Jwobot You're right, I never looked up the tv, just assumed. My bad. Looking at the manual it never talks about it receiving 5.1 over its HDMI input. It always talks about a toslink input for 5.1 audio. If I had to guess Vizio used the same HDMI boards as their other tvs without 5.1 speakers and added in a 5.1 pre-amp with the toslink input.
To the OP, get a toslink cable and see if that works. |

| Unfortunately yes, I've done that. |

| Whenever I set it to Dolby Digital , no audio comes out of the speakers. I try watching something on discovery hd, which I assume has DD. I also set the hdmi input on the receiver to force DD, but it hasn't worked.
If it is set to DD and the content is stereo, will it automatically output as stereo or does the audio mode need to be changed?
I don't think it matters too much, oh well, |
