You're right, I never looked up the tv, just assumed. My bad. Looking at the manual it never talks about it receiving 5.1 over its HDMI input. It always talks about a toslink input for 5.1 audio. If I had to guess Vizio used the same HDMI boards as their other tvs without 5.1 speakers and added in a 5.1 pre-amp with the toslink input.

To the OP, get a toslink cable and see if that works.
