You said you need 1.3 HDMI cables, those are cheap at MONOPRICE.COM I got one for $5 only.

Also, you might just have HDMI handshake problem, you fix that by taking out HDMI plug, and reinserting it. Hard Reboot. Hard Reboot will refresh all available software and modules on system, as well as clear out memory cache. IPG and other data may take up to 30 minutes or more to fully download.

1. Turn off 8300 and wait 5 or more seconds.
2. Unplug power cord from 8300 and wait 5 or more seconds.
3. If you are resetting an external drive too, unplug it's power cord at this point and wait 5 or more seconds, then plug power cord back into external drive and wait 5 or more seconds.
4. Press and hold Power on 8300 front panel. While Power is depressed, plug 8300 power cord back in. Continue to hold Power until 8300 display says "boot" and/or begins to cycle a few times (usually about 15 seconds).

NOTE: Hard Reboot will resolve MANY issues with not only external drives, but memory issues too. You should WAIT until the reboot is completely finished before powering up. It usually takes about 5 - 10 min, depending on your application and IPG data. Best way to determine when the download is finished is to watch the front panel indicators. On the front panel, where the : (colon) seperates the hours and minutes, the bottom " . " dot will appear after all OS firmware has been loaded. An STB getting a download or initializing will be blank. My bad. Looking at the manual it never talks about it receiving 5.1 over its HDMI input. It always talks about a toslink input for 5.1 audio. If I had to guess Vizio used the same HDMI boards as their other tvs without 5.1 speakers and added in a 5.1 pre-amp with the toslink input.

I've set the box to pass Dolby Digital, and no sound comes through. I've set the box to HDMI, and standard stereo sound comes across. I know the box is receiving and sending 5.1 audio, because I've connected the optical out from the box to the input of the TV, and it plays 5.1 audio at that point. For some reason it's not sending 5.1 over HDMI. I've contacted WOW, and received this reply.

"We do not support the HDMI connection. While it is provided for those who need it, we cannot resolve issue when it does not work properly. If the optical out has 5.1 sound then the box has surround enabled. There are no other settings to check to get 5.1 from the HDMI connection. You can try to reset the box to see if that will do anything. To reset the box, pull out the power cord of the box for 10 seconds. Then plug it back in and wait for the time to re-appear. It can take 2-4 minutes to do so. Once you see the time, check the sound. If it does not work, you can also check the settings of the device you are using to make sure its settings are correct."
