I live in the upstate (Greenville), but have inlaws that live at the beach. Myrlte Beach is a tourist town. It is slammed durring warm weather and dead when it's cold. During the summer, Myrtle Beach will be bumper to bumper with traffic. My wife grew up in Myrtle Beach. The bing industries at the beach are hospitality/toursit realted and construction. Not a whole lot else. Feel free to IM me is you have any questions.

I live in Mt. Pleasant, SC about two hours south of Myrtle Beach.

Myrtle Beach is the South Carolina vacation hotspot for families. Though they do have biker weeks during the year. I think they are primarily Labor and Memorial Day weeks.
You are about 3 hrs to Columbia and 4 to 5 hrs to Charlotte. The cost of living in the area is no where near what it is in MI.
The seasons are much more reasonable. It will get hot during the summer but you will have an ocean breeze. Almost zero breeze when you get further inland as close as Conway.

Some of the best places to eat are in Murrells Inlet which is south of Myrtle Beach. But there are plenty of buffet places that serve very good food also. There is a general rule about the restaurants there. "If there is a line at the door, the food is cheap or good". I have found most of them being both. But I prefer Murrells Inlet for some finer dining.

I have a time share there that is available during the 29th week of the year and the rent is 250 a night for 6 nights and 7 days, but willing to make a deal to anyone interested.

I live in Florence (about 60 miles east) MB/Grand Strand area is booming. Even with the housing problems in the US. I would caution you NOT to purchase land or housing in what was a "BAY" area. The local realtor's will not tell you freely that the housing area or condo is built in a old marsh. I work for SC Forestry and these areas are naturally areas of potentially hard to contain wildfire loads. But the weather here is definitely much more friendly than MI in winter. Temp here today was 74 degrees

What are you expecting to do there.... yeah, year round could be tough as a new comer who may not stick around... seasonal (summer/service stuff you might get if timing is right)

Currently I work as a contractor for a cable company, think I can almost always fall back on that just about anywhere. But I need a change of pace so I will be looking for something else. We are going down at the end of may to look at some apts. and check out a few jobs. But we'll see.

Well, the major cable company in the area is Road Runner / Time Warner.

You may want to look at Apartment Finder and Apartment Guide to get an idea of what is in the area. It could save you some time hunting one down.

From what I've seen I like the "dirty south", NO on the Ham radio but I've always had an interest in it. Used to mess with the CB years ago.

You should get interested one reason? Inclement Weather. MB is full of storm chasers and we ahve a great relationship with the local government and national weather service, so you'll get quicker updates via the ham radio of bad wx approching.

Plus, we are a great group of guys and gals too. We are tight and have lots of fun on the radios and having BBQ's and such.

Ya know I have always had an interest in storm chasing but never knew how to get into it. And I've never known anyone else that does it. Here in Michigan its not so popular.
