Not good. Line 1 has always been 1ms all across and the other numbers have always been 15ms or so. What could be the problem? I have always got my advertised speeds and just today barely getting over 3mb. I keep doing a tracert and the numbers are staying consistent. |

I have always got 48ms ping and below. With the speeds. I have always got 4920k or so consistently. Upload has always been about 486. So, it seems my ping is in some really bad shape and my browsing speed. |

1 edit | reply to KoRnGtL15 I don't know about power cycling helping this problem. I guess anything is possible. However, if I saw high latency on the router I would do these things: (1) close all applications that are accessing the internet (I.E., instant messengers, etc) and look at the ethernet port LED that your PC is connected to on the router. You should not see any activity (unless maybe it's a flash every once in a while - seconds or minutes). if you do see any kind of steady activity then I would say you have some malware one something running in the background that is sending out data and you need to do a virus scan, spybot scan etc. (2) boot your PC in Safe mode with networking (which should prevent any possible malware or anything else from running) and do some traceroutes in safe mode and see if you still see latency on the router. If you do - then I don't know - maybe you have a router or ethernet card problem. |

1 edit | reply to KoRnGtL15 Found the problem. Its the Comodo firewall. The newest version is hosing down networks left and right. Major bug and they know about it. The only fix is by uninstalling it or going back to the previous version. Unreal!

| reply to KoRnGtL15 Glad you found the problem, I still don't understand how your router was getting such latency --- I guess being developed internally. I really dissaprove of most firewalls/antivirus programs on the market.
I like very lightweight programs with smart/responsible user browsing.
Things like AVG come to mind. Symantec, Fsecure, Micro-trend, and other bloated AV programs cause more problems than they are worth in the long run, imho. -- Life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced. |

| I agree with you. Ya know. I am pretty pissed about the firewall being messed up like that. No wonder why my connection has sucked the last week or so. Do you have a suggestion for a software firewall you approve and thats good? Also one that is very simple and straight forward to use. |

1 edit | you have a router so you really don't need a firewall - but if you do what one - in addition to my router I have the free version of ZoneAlarm - and the only reason I have it really is because I had it "before" I got a router - and it can be a pain to uninstall ZoneAlarm (I've read - the uninstall is not a totally reliable uninstall). In Fact your router may have Firewall settings in it that you can set up. Also you are using XP I believe so there is the XP firewall if you want to use that. |

Maybe you are.
At any rate, I would uninstall any security software you have. Down AVG free edition. Run it, and it will auto update daily on its own, and has a low memory footprint. It protects and doesn't slow anything down.
Here, click below to read about it, and download. The free version is all one needs for a personal computer:

That link can be a little hard to find in all the 'paid' versoins. But it is honestly all you need running.

| One reason why you should use a 2-WAY software firewall (by the way, the XP built-in one is not 2-way, but Zone Alarm is): If some malware should get in to your PC and attempts to "phone home" to the Mothership, a 2-way firewall will stop this; if you have no software firewall, or only a 1-way one, you are wide-open. |

| reply to KoRnGtL15 I'm glad I found this thread. I just made my new PC and instead of using Kerio 2.x, I thought I would try another firewall. After reading about Comodo in PCMag I thought I try it. My speed is half what it should be. Probably will have to uninstall it. It was kind of complicated. But I do like a bidirectional FW. Sometimes .wmv files want to connect to the net and I always so "no". |
