On any positive measure of success - literacy, per capita income, education, livability etc. we have it head and shoulders over you. Yes, we're a liberal state (Roscoe "P. We'd vote to sell your festering state back to Spain in a heartbeat.
And as for the "comment" that somehow VA and DC have better growth rates than MD, allow me to retort. DC is much more liberal than MD and has nothing like the economic prosperity we do. NY is more screwed than Eliot Spitzer with a hooker. Of course, NY politics is already done. You already know who's gonna win, except the NY Yankees when they play Boston. I'm shocked Spitzer, whom a lot of powerful people hate, wasn't done in earlier. If Spitzer had played by the rules in NY politics, he'd could have had hookers visit the Governors Mansion with police escorts. And, someone else would've paid for them. But, he just had to do it his way rather than just give the powerful people what they want--gov't contracts. So, all of Florida is nothing but a bunch of "inbred, Bible-thumping trailer-living, six-toed folks" is it?
Nothing but a "festering state, eh"? Don't know about you, but I've enjoyed every trip I've ever taken to Florida. The sunset in Key West is awesome, and the port at Ft. Lauderdale is a great place to mingle with folks from all around the globe.
News flash, fella. MD isn't the end all be all of wonderful living. Last time I checked, Baltimore isn't exactly a murder free zone, and the Inner Harbor is not quite devoid of panhandlers and homeless people. Every place has it's issues.
It's so typical. I bet you're the type that spends countless hours scolding others for pre judging people based on their ethnicity or sexual orientation, then hides behind the anonymity of a message board while exercising the same degree of prejudice based on someones geographic location.

 | reply to Cuchulainn Hmm,
I suppose you have never been to the Tampa Bay area, or Naples, or South Miami Beach, or Boca Raton or the Keys or...Shall I go on?
I would say there are very few places in America where more multi-millionaires are congregated, or where million dollar homes are the average, and not the exception. Hell, even the panhandle is becoming that way now.
Florida is a state of transplants. There are VERY few people who can proclaim that their families have been in the state more than a generation or two. Therefore, your proclamation that all Floridians are inbred, trailer living six-toed folks just doesn't apply to 90% of the state -- unless you want to call Ohioans and Indianians and Michiganians and New Yorkers those names, since this is where the majority of transplants hail from.
I would seriously challenge your "per capita" income claim, especially if you want to compare it to those Floridians who live in the aforementioned areas of the state. Take a yacht out around the Bay area, or along the South Beach Coast and tell me Maryland compares to the congregation of mega-millionaires living there. |

Montgomery County is in their own little world. When the last round of take hikes came about they cheered except when they found out the top earners would really get hit. They cried and they came up with other creative means to avoid paying their fair share. The joke is on them now because the "computer tax" is being repealed with a special surcharged on those who make $750,000 or more of which most live in Montgomery County.
Baltimore City had a very high murder rate until they finally stopped the liberal way of fighting crime and actually started arresting people. |

We have a high education rate and better colleges as well. So you can keep your stupid taxes, anti-gun laws and your bad drivers...VA beat MD out any day.
Oh yeah, you can have your illegals pay in state tution as well. Lot's will be coming your way now since VA is finally cracking down on the problem.
Your wanton attacks on people from Florida and bible thumpers among others also show how open minded you liberals really are. | reply to moonpuppy So true. I really think the smell from DC clouds the minds of the surrounding MD counties. When we are done building the wall between the US and Mexico, we need to wall off DC and surrounding counties. They then can be free to tax and generate bogus laws to each other, all they wish. |

Miami and the Keys are really great (except for the constant castro ranting), but even the more "civilized" areas of the state still sport many a wahoo with his big confederate flag on the rear window of his pickup. The natives aren't going anywhere.
As for nanny states, Florida does have a bizarre socialist streak which I never quite figured out. |

The point is Cuchulainn engaged in broad reaching generalizations to make his/her point.
I have no doubt FL has it's share of trailer park hicks waving confederate flags from the back of their pickups.
As does my home state of PA. Same with upstate NY, the rural areas of NJ, and the lower Eastern shore of MD.
I've been to parts of MD that resembled the filming location of "The Hills Have Eyes" on distant treks to visit relatives who chose to move to such locations. Hey, more power to them if that's what they like, but MD has it's fare share of racist confederate flag waving trailer park living hicks. For Cuchulainn to look down his nose at Floridians as he/she does for having such natives is BS.
Every state has it's band of freaks, including MD. Does FL have more freaks than MD? I don't know.
But that's not the issue. The issue is the elitist bullshit. The folks living in MD have no place looking down their nose at the folks in FL.... -- Petty people are disproportionably corrupted by petty power

kyler13Is your fiber grounded? join:2006-12-12 Arnold, MD | reply to scrummie02 It's nice to sit here and listen to you compare a specific area of the state of VA to the entirety of MD. I'm certain that rural VA does much to drag down much of these high averages you speak of and keeps the liberal thinking at bay. If we're just comparing "areas", well then there are plenty of reasons to AVOID nothern VA in favor of some much nicer areas of MD like Montgomery County outside of the beltway and western Howard County that don't suffer as much from the day to day problems that plague a large part of northern VA. |
