| Should I upgrade my modem? I have Verizon Residential DSL. Using the same modem (Westell) for 6-7 years (since 2001 or 2002). Should I request an upgrade to newer hardware? I recently upgraded my speed from 768/128 to 1.5m/356. Verizon tech said if it seems to be working OK, no need to change the modem. They says it's up to me (they're happy to sell me a new modem if I want one). My download is about 700-900k. I am a LONG way from the CO, so I do not expect the full rated download speed, but am wondering if improvements in hardware/software might increase my performance. It would seem that the technology would have improved somewhat in 6 years. Maybe I'm wrong... |

 | Remember you don't need to get the modem from Verizon, My old about 10 years at least Westell modem just died. I end ed up with a Zoom 5654, and after a quick call to their tech support line I'm back up and running. I picked it up at Staples. I was looking at a D-Link modem, but could not find a local retailer and couldn't get online to order anything so I went with the Zoom. Only been working for a few hours but easily able to add my wife's computer via one of the 4 ethernet ports, which allowed me to eliminate my router. |

| reply to DrDubious Newer modems would help with the distance, as they would support newer DSL technologies if your CO is equipped with new equipment, and a newer modem would work better on marginal connections as well. Otherwise, if your current modem is working fine, there is no need to replace it unless you want to replace it. |

Sounds like you're not, since your old modem is a Westell. I have been a customer since about 2002 as well. I had been stuck on 768/128 for years and was told they couldn't upgrade my speeds because of the modem & circuit.
From the Direct forum here, I finally convinced someone at Verizon to switch me to the ATM network. A day later I received a Westell 6110 and the day after that I was moved to the ATM network. Now I qualified for and received the speed upgrade to 3.0/768k. |
