The software includes stuff from Motive.  However, it appears that you do not have to use the CD or install the Motive software if you use MacOS Safari.  I wonder if Windows Safari will work without Motive?  If not, you could probably use User Agent Switcher with firefox to pretend to be MacOS Safari.<br><br>Still, there needs to be an official way to get a userid and password without installing crap software on Windows.]]></description>

Since then, I've changed my PPPOE settings to use my account creds. However, I have a 6mb/756k line, my modem says I'm provisioned at 8mb, but my speeds SUCK for anything except broadband test sites. The speed tests here report almost 100% theoretical max, but I never break 100KB/s anywhere else and usually stay maxed at ~65KB/s. Anyone else experiencing this? This is VERY irritating =/]]></description>

At this point, they can go to any webpage they want, which leads to a lot of customers calling in wondering why their modem is not showing the static ip they should have (because AT&T didn't do a good job of telling people about the new registration process and some helpdesk agents aren't doing their hobs completely. A lot of the customers think once they get online, they are done.<br><br>Then they go to dslinstallation.bellsouth.net. I was told that based on the information provided by the customer during the registration process, the system detects that they need an @bellsouth.net email address. I don't know if it makes a difference if they use the info you've provided but I wouldn't be surprised if it caused issues.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[<A HREF="/useremail/u/1531207"><b>STDog</b></A> : That's an ActiveX concrol from Motive. <br><br>It for the stupid Guided installation w/ audio.<br><br>I did install that control, but I cannot find and AT&T software installed outside that control.<br><br>It's handles the modem detection, but it gave me a selection of 3 or 4 different modems or other. I chose other.<br><br>After the registration confirmation page (shows user/pass, security questions, etc..) I stopped. I didn't install any of the tools.<br><br>I forgot I had ActiveX allows in IE (I only use it for company apps than require).<br><br>It installs 3 dlls, but I have disabled them in IE. I normally use Firefox anyway. <description><![CDATA[<A HREF="/useremail/u/1528033"><b>anonyjane</b></A> : Supposedly, the new process was implemented to follow FCC guidelines about how customer information needs to be handled. Those guidelines basically prohibit any agent with AT&T from having access to a customer's password. Since you cannot create a username without a password, customers are the only ones who can go through this process. <br><br>I am assuming that the site is compatible with MACs. I don't think they worried about making it compatible with Linux users, I guess they assume that they'll have at least one Windows PC that they can use to set up the initial connection. <br><br>They've pretty much tied our hands so we cannot do it for you and they also don't give us any info about how secure the software is or how to remove it if the customer does not wish to have it on their computer. I also don't know how to get around installing the Motive software, if there even is a way around it. It stinks.  ]]></description>

Cannot do it because it wants to install the MOTIVE software to detect the modem first.<br><br>Well, this MOTIVE software is exactly the part I could not uninstall!!  And it seems rather dangerous as it allows software raw access to ethernet packets.  Not to mention the publisher is unverified.<br><br>This is stupid.  What to linux/MacOS users do?<br><br>Can we still call support and have them create the userid/password before setting up the modem?]]></description>

I was told that if you stop the registration by not installing the software, you will not be able to completely register, but I'm not sure if that is true or not.]]></description>

They should have chosen a username when they signed up for service. They should have written it down if they could not remember it. The password should have been their phone number. (7 digits no area code)  If there was not a piece of paper with the username with the modem, and they could not remember the username that they chose at signup, they could have called ATT and got the username and password. You would then have accessed the modem using the web interface and entered the username@bellsouth.net and password in the proper place and conneced.<br><br>That is how it used to be done anyway.  ]]></description>

The problem was I couldn't find a link that would let them create their userid and password.  They had a letter with their "account number" aka phone number and an activation code.  I couldn't find a web page to enter the info to create their login userid and password.<br><br>Once the cd installed, I couldn't completely uninstall the crap.<br><br>At least they got great line stats.]]></description>
