Call sign issue date

Does anyone know of a way to look up the original issue date of a call sign? I googled allover but can't find one. All of the call sign servers give the date of the last renewal but not the date the license was first issued.

www.vanityhq.com has a lot of license info you won't find in the ULS or callbooks.

Wow amazing info there. Unfortunately it only goes back to 1981.

Try the FCC ULS Database, might list it there..
»wireless.fcc.gov/uls/

Problem is that if info isn't listed elsewhere, you're pretty much out of luck since I believe they all pull from the ULS...
Maybe try calling or getting in contact somehow with the FCC. They keep records (paper too) going back to the beginning of the FCC. I know the online ULS has detailed lists of every update / upgrade done to your license.. I only became licensed in early 2006, so I don't know how far back it goes.

At one time there was a guy who had ALL the old callbooks, and would look it up for a nominal fee. Even the FCC considered old callbooks valid for when *they* didn't have, or couldn't find the records!

They still do... I know that you used to be able to show proof you passed the morse code requirement with a copy of a callbook showing your license class if you let it expire... Even if it was decades prior.

There are some guys on QRZ.COM that I can recall having old callbooks.

Ask at Vanity HQ; a nice guy there researched my 1X2 and found (to my surprise) that it had never been previously issued. I had to wait a few weeks for his answer, but it was free.

I did a search for my old callsigns and can't find any of them that I remember having. (wb2ccs last one issued to me) and (wb2ddj first one issued to me back sometime in the early 70s or late sixties). I even remember my callsign when I was stationed in london back in the early 80s.

Guess their records don't go back far enough. Was last licensed in 1985 and still have the license in my wallet.

I somehow let it lapse years ago and just forgot to renew it.

Would like to get licensed again and found some of the info here interesting as far as them accepting the code requirement from decades ago. Took my general class exam years ago when stationed in scotland late sixties.

I'm a VE, and I'll be glad to give you credit for the code...

(Of course, you don't need the code for any amateur licence anymore.)

Is the original issue date needed in order to upgrade a license? For instance, if I were to upgrade from general to extra, would I need to know the date I first was granted the general class? I first got my license in the late 70's or early 80's, but I have no idea exactly when anymore.

No. All you need is a current General class license.
