(wb2ccs last one issued to me) and (wb2ddj first one issued to me back sometime in the early 70s or late sixties). I even remember my callsign when I was stationed in london back in the early 80s.

Guess their records don't go back far enough. Was last licensed in 1985 and still have the license in my wallet.

I somehow let it lapse years ago and just forgot to renew it.

They still do... I know that you used to be able to show proof you passed the morse code requirement with a copy of a callbook showing your license class if you let it expire... Even if it was decades prior.

There are some guys on QRZ.COM that I can recall having old callbooks.

Problem is that if info isn't listed elsewhere, you're pretty much out of luck since I believe they all pull from the ULS...
Maybe try calling or getting in contact somehow with the FCC. They keep records (paper too) going back to the beginning of the FCC. I know the online ULS has detailed lists of every update / upgrade done to your license.. I only became licensed in early 2006, so I don't know how far back it goes.
