| reply to impala Re: how to setup new dsl access ACCOUNT w/o using the install cd
Even with the new process, you don't have to use the Installation CD. Surf into the modem and set attreg@att.net as the username and attreg as the password. Then go to dslinstallation.bellsouth.net to begin the online registration process (choosing username and pw). You will have to install some software (it doesn't give you an option to de-select it). I was told that if you stop the registration by not installing the software, you will not be able to completely register, but I'm not sure if that is true or not. |

1 edit | I don't remember installing any software from the CD.
I connected to the route/modem, used the attreg user/pss to connect the modem.
I ran the setup tool, said it was my own modem. It took me ti the registration page (I guess that the dslinstallation site, I couldn't find the address before).
I filled in the reginfo, got to the summary page, and exited.
Went back to the modem, changed the user/pass and reconnected.
It's worked fine since (Feb 25). -- "Dependence begets subservience and venality, suffocates the germ of virtue, and prepares fit tools for the designs of ambition." --Thomas Jefferson |

I just tried this from a non bell-south ISP to see how far I could go to create the userid using alternate access BEFORE installing the modem. Cannot do it because it wants to install the MOTIVE software to detect the modem first.
Well, this MOTIVE software is exactly the part I could not uninstall!! And it seems rather dangerous as it allows software raw access to ethernet packets. Not to mention the publisher is unverified.
This is stupid. What to linux/MacOS users do?
Can we still call support and have them create the userid/password before setting up the modem? |

must install activeX software | after clicking cancel |
see my screenshots: First is the prompt to install the Motive software. Second is after clicking cancel on the first page.
So, where can I specify my own modem? After motive doesn't detect it? It's too late then. |

| reply to impala Supposedly, the new process was implemented to follow FCC guidelines about how customer information needs to be handled. Those guidelines basically prohibit any agent with AT&T from having access to a customer's password. Since you cannot create a username without a password, customers are the only ones who can go through this process.
I am assuming that the site is compatible with MACs. I don't think they worried about making it compatible with Linux users, I guess they assume that they'll have at least one Windows PC that they can use to set up the initial connection.
They've pretty much tied our hands so we cannot do it for you and they also don't give us any info about how secure the software is or how to remove it if the customer does not wish to have it on their computer. I also don't know how to get around installing the Motive software, if there even is a way around it. It stinks. |

| WinXP IE7: motive install required WinXP FireFox: no go "Unsupported Computer Configuration" MacOS Safari: works OK; skips motive or any software MacOS Camino: no go
Guess I'll be using MacOS the next time.
If you don't know, Safari is the default MacOS browser. Camino is related to FireFox (but not the same as). |

Don't you think it's odd that "dslinstallation.bellsouth.net" redirects to a page with a "AT&T Yahoo High Speed Internet" end user license agreement -- God bless our troops |

| reply to impala That's an ActiveX concrol from Motive.
It for the stupid Guided installation w/ audio.
I did install that control, but I cannot find and AT&T software installed outside that control.
It's handles the modem detection, but it gave me a selection of 3 or 4 different modems or other. I chose other.
After the registration confirmation page (shows user/pass, security questions, etc..) I stopped. I didn't install any of the tools.
I forgot I had ActiveX allows in IE (I only use it for company apps than require).
It installs 3 dlls, but I have disabled them in IE. I normally use Firefox anyway. I'm sure I could delete them and the registry entries for them without iusse. -- "Dependence begets subservience and venality, suffocates the germ of virtue, and prepares fit tools for the designs of ambition." --Thomas Jefferson |

FYI: the CD does have software for Mac. The software includes stuff from Motive. However, it appears that you do not have to use the CD or install the Motive software if you use MacOS Safari. I wonder if Windows Safari will work without Motive? If not, you could probably use User Agent Switcher with firefox to pretend to be MacOS Safari.
Still, there needs to be an official way to get a userid and password without installing crap software on Windows. |

wayjac Premium,MVM join:2001-12-22 Indy | Looks like for right now there's no way around the software install. As far as I can tell the motive software will uninstall cleanly. You should be able to do the registration from any internet connection. |

@bellsouth.net | How do you uninstall Motive? I have looked in add/remove programs and I don't see it. |

| Most of us Microsoft Windows users are now running Windows XP or Windows Vista. Could we not set a System Restore point and install this software and set up the modem and when done roll back the computer using this System Restore point that we created before installing this software? |

| reply to corporal8 I prefer using the control panel add/remove program tool, most times it works. The name for the motive software in add/remove program is ATT-NAP

Before removing the software you'll also find 2 folders in the program files folder save a copy of the install.log file from the att folder

I tried this in WinXP with Firefox and User Agent Switcher Add-on and it appeared to work without motive. I say appeared to because I got as far as I did with MacOS Safari; past the point where motive installs. I got to the point where you enter your phone/account # for identification. However, I don't have a new user to register, and don't expect to have one any time soon.
It didn't matter if User Agent Switcher was set to pretend to be Safari or IE. If Safari, motive was not downloaded. If set for IE; motive is downloaded but firefox doesn't install it. |

The pages below are with the motive software installed

This is the page for Re-installs / Additional computer

| MacOS Safari New Customer |
starting with the same ole »dslinstallation.bellsouth.net with MacOS Safari I end up here after selecting New Customer. No Motive installed. I can do the same in Windows Firefox using the User Agent Switcher. |
