First,
Egeezer_fan,IF i have (will have) many a "curious question about how something (electronic) works,or HOW TO, i KNOW, i can come to dsl reports to either get an answer, or be shown a link to find a possible answer.
2nd
IF an electronic device makes me "curious about how it works or HOW TO,then more then likely "someone" else has thought about the same thing or for some unknown reason hasn't asked or is to "shy" to ask, so the replies (as with EG reply has shown not only helps me but others learn as well.

also i called Nokia,(i have a 6010-one of the last of the big palm size- phones I think, purchased 2-04-2005)
and explained to them about Friend "L" new Nokia phone-6085- he just purchased,see pict,plz)
but more importantly I was told with my model/cell phone,
from what the Nokia tech told me,most of which is "common sense" runs along the same lines as email on your computer
1.(my name) first most cell phones come with a (help me out with name) ???? cable that you plug into your cell phone, then plug into your computer,
go to our site & you can D/L most of the software updates,
but 9my name) looking at your phone,1st your entitled to an upgraded phone-

but on your 6010 phone,there is no way that the software can be updated,
simple because 3 yrs ago it wasn't incorporated into the cell phone,

back to your friends phone,the 6085 tell him to plug the ??? cord into his computer,go to our site & he can d/l any updates,

As far as virus's on his cell phone , yes they are out there but they are still rare,
DON'T open any text message's or emails that he doesn't know who they are from,

On friends phone,he switched from Verizon, (reason he said was broken or no coverage area, and also, (NEVER heard of this)
that Verizon charged him to retrieved the numbers of people that called him & left a voice mail.

So far, though, antiviruses or firewalls for cell phones are much more trouble than their worth. Malware for cell phones is very few in number, it typically affects only complex smartphones like Symbian OS based designs, and maybe most importantly, malware programs for cell phones have so far always required a whole lot of clicking okay to suspicious prompts and warnings about insecure software before infection. So the AV packages aren't too useful when you can avoid the infections entirely just by not accepting the installation or download of odd executables. The AVs do cause enormous system slowdown, though, and can make the fastest smartphone literally crawl by eating all the resources, so that's why they're more of a nuisance than anything else.

Basically:
1) Don't ever accept a download or install of anything that you're not absolutely 100 % certain that it's both good and expected. If you weren't planning to download something, and some kind of a prompt comes up or you get a message with a software attachment, never accept them, never install them.
2) When you don't need it, keep Bluetooth disabled. (Also saves the battery). You might also want to make your device hidden so that other, unknown Bluetooth devices cannot see it.

As phones become more complicated and advanced, there will no doubt be more exposure to threats.

While viruses in the conventional sense of the word are presently rare, more common security issues are related to disposal of old phones. Many people give phones away, donate them or sell them. A brief survey of Ebay shows thousands available.

Many people who dispose of their phones do little or nothing to remove the identifying data from the devices, which can have private contact information, documents, pictures and other information useful to miscreants or just plain nosy people.

Here is a handy site that provides information on how to purge many cell devices of personal information.

The other exposures are more along the scam lines. They include downloading "free" ringtones and wallpapers that are actually auto-accepting trials or slam the user into additional overpriced and useless pay services that are difficult or impossible to cancel. See Ben Edelman's article here.

As for using Google to select mobile antivirus products, do so with extreme caution. As with other security products, stick with known vendors at known web sites. Google is not always your friend.

just curious,for those that use text messaging,/email through a cell phone,

Question is there anything like a firewall or antivirus that can be d/l into a cell phone to prevent a virus,(or can a virus even happen) on a cell phone like a computer?
