| [DSL] Lag Spikes, anything I can do?
Hello.
I suffer from lag spikes at almost timeable intervals. It seems that every 20 minutes or so, I suffer a lag spike for about 5-10 seconds. This makes conventional downloading impossible, and I have to resort to download managers that support the resuming of downloads. Here is all the information I know about and was able to grab: »/tweakr/block:···a=normal
1064kb download 506kb upload 80ms Latency to LA server from Washington
isp= Verizon High-Speed Potential Speed= 3mbs down, 700kb up

No PPPoE.
Vista Business ----- I have looked at the modem/router/firewall pc (running Monowall) and none of them seem to be power cycling. The electricity in my area is stable so its not a brownout.
My internet speeds are great, it's just the not-so-random lag makes playing games frustrating and downloading worse.
One final note, I remember tweaking the TCP/IP settings of Vista some time ago and now I have read here that that is not something I should have done, is there a way to reset those things to their defaults?
Thanks all. -ck64 |

| First, there are no download tweaks for Vista. So whatever snake oil you poured into you computer clogged it up. Do you remember what you did?
As far as the lags, call VZ; there is nada that you can do about that. -- "You can observe a lot by watching". Yogi Berra |

| reply to crystalklear64 Well, I believe I turned off auto-tuning and set some of my own numbers in there.
Used the following command: netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled
I then used a program called TCP Optimizer. --- A couple questions about the results of that test.
1. The ICMP unpingable thing. Anything I can do about that?
2. How do I change my MTU to 1500 as the little thing suggests? I see the FAQ thing but it just tells me what it is and how to see what mine is, not how to change it > Is this one of those things I cannot do in Vista? I may have changed this using that TCP Optimizer program.
Thanks again. |

| • For the MTU .... »Tweaking FAQ »Changing MTU
• For the global autotuning ...
Open up an elevated command prompt.
Enter the following command to enable auto-tuning
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal
You can use this command to view the states of the TCP global paremeters.
netsh interface tcp show global -- "You can observe a lot by watching". Yogi Berra |
